Last year I won a clothes voucher and was told over 20,000 entered. And I have noticed that there are a lot more people comping now. For biggy prizes I would probably treble that !

Millions of entries for ITV? I say 20000 people max.

But if those 20,000 people are putting in maximum entries and some of them are using more than one phone then how many entries would that make?

The 20,000 entries estimate for ITV comps must be far too low. Given that, say conservatively, only 25% of them are free on-line, the total income from the competition would only be about £15,000 and some of that goes to the phone companies.

If that was all their revenue, it would not cover the cost of the prize (£20,000 -25,000 usually) let alone the other overheads.

I don't think ITV run these competitions for any other reason than to boost their currently flagging income.

I won a competition in 2009 and was told in the letter over 30,000 people had entered. My win rate has gone down drastically since 2008, when I used to win something at least weekly. I think there are definitely a lot more people entering competitions nowadays than there used to be, partly due to Martin talking about them in newsletters with his Comping For Cash articles etc and also the fact there is a competition highlighted in the weekly newsletter...and of course more people are losing their jobs than ever, so have more time to enter comps....

And when people see their friends / family win, they want a go. I've had a pretty good 6 months (Started comping in Feb) and everytime I show my family what I've won, it spurs them on to carry on. So far, my mum, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, a cousin and 3 friends have signed up to here. The good thing is, they find the rest of the site useful too :)

As Flickering Ember said above, people are losing their jobs, and worrying how to fund birthday / christmas presents. When I first had "kids stuff" wins, I gave them to the kids.... but now I put them away for presents. I wouldn't be able to afford these things otherwise.

As for the ITV comps, if 20,000 people did enter.... some comps are 9 entries per number.... say they all have 3 numbers (some have more!).... that works out at 540,000 entries!! But ITV comps are always going to attract lots of entries!
    Thanks to all posters :A

I've tried ITV.com free entries, TV choice, Absolute radio, Itunes 2011, Evening Standard, Dorset cereals, The Sun Ipad compo, Morrisons comps but can't a sniff of a win from these!

I wrote and asked Chat magazine once how many entries they get as part of a research study I was doing at the time. They said they average 140,000 entries  but they do run 4 or 5 at a time so if same people entered them all it`s still 20,000 to 30,000.
Make £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.

Interesting thread.... I like to rely on the fact that you still get a lot of everyday people that thnk "whats the point in entering - im never gonna win" especially with the effort or even slight-effort comps... Today I am going on my 4* hotel prize for the Horrid Henry Prem tomorrow.. this was on facebook for Vue Cinemas.. with slight photo effort and they only got 12 entrys!!!
I too have noticed wins go down since 2008 when I started comping.. but i also got bored/divroced and had almost a year off... im sure as people join up you also get people drop off the radars too....
BACK and READY..... waiting on Royal Mail!!!

I definitely agree that the number entering now is far greater that 2/3 years ago. I started comping in 2004. I only enter for prizes I want and never bother for DVDs, books, CDs, and other small prizes. From 2004 - 2009 I won some fantastic prizes and big prizes including ITV Real Deal, 144 bottles of wine, a £1000 Debenhams gift card, holiday to Kenya, short break to France, short break to Barcelona, Hotpoint washing machine.

Now, 2010 and 2011 are a different story completely, I have won hardly anything at all. In 2009 I won around £6,000 prizes. In 2010 In won £700 of prizes. So far this year £479

The France competition I won in 2007 I was told there were 12000 entries.

Remember though there are lots of other places where comps are posted as well as here.
