I've suggested that he contacts AA,

Not a bad idea, although Al Anon would be better. They will explain in no uncertain words what he can do to 'deal with' his wife's drinking. It will be a lengthy and on-going process, but I'd wager that at no point will it include trying to shield her from any mention of alcohol.

If an alcoholic wants to drink, they will drink. Be that premium wine with a £15 off voucher, Store's Own Brand Cider at 50p per can, or the mouthwash from the bathroom.

On the other hand, if an alcoholic is determined to give up, they will resist all manner of temptation. Many pub landlords are recovering alcoholics - serving booze all day every day and never touching a drop.

If your friend wants to help his wife, I think he needs to start by focusing his energies on understanding her illness a bit better.

Bluntly, AA and Al-Anon are full of !!!!!! and what they believe is very weird quasi-religious nonsense.

Be that as it may, they have still helped a heck of a lot of people give up drinking, and provided support to an awful lot of families/friends of alcoholics.

Their 'success' rate is worse than no treatment at all - they constantly lie about remission rates.

5% of people who attend AA stop drinking; 5% of those who don't spontaneously give up anyway; but there is evidence that AA can lead to increased binge-drinking.

And AA in the UK is overwhelmingly white, reactionary and mono-cultured.
