Local Toby Carvery Vent

Just a wee mini vent really to get it off my chest. Last night a group of us, 6 in total went to the local toby carvery and we all spend a bloomin fortune there on our wee girly nights out over the course of a year. We love the value for money and yummy grub lol.

Last night after our meal we all ordered desserts and my friend, (a fellow mser) ordered choc fudge cake. The waitress asked if she would like cream, or ice cream, to which my friend replied "can i just have both please??"

The waitress refused and said that you can only have one or the other. So my friend replied "look ill pay for the extra ice cream or whatever" and the waitress still refused saying she couldnt do that.

Dont get why yo cant add on if your paying the extra. Needless to say my friend just refused any dessert. And even worse is that the waitress serving us turned out to also be the carvery manager. what a stingy lot they are :rotfl:

whilst I agree it hardly would hav been taxing to squirt some cream onto your friend's dessert, they may not have an option on the till to add the extra cost on. maybe only having the either or option allows them to keep the cost down.

I like toby aswell, although the last couple of times we have been we have either been overcharged or had to complain about something or other - its going downhill in my opinion.

Sounds pretty poor customer service to me seeing as you'd brought a group of people along bringing the restaurantsome tidy dosh! A dollop of cream wouldn't have hurt anyone!
Can't get the blinking service today can you, you really can't!

Really? I've always found the food to be mass-produced and not particularly yummy at all.

Always wondered how they manage to make all the vegetables taste of cabbage.

Toby Carvery's are dirt cheap - you couldn't possibly spend a fortune in one if you tried!

I agree that it's bad service for a restaurant to refuse to sell you food, though. However, given the (lack of) staff training, the ridiculously low prices and the cheap feel to such places, I'm not sure I would expect any kind of civilised or bespoke customer service. Hey, at least it was cheap!

This reminds me of an incident many years go in the 'coffee shop' of a big London Hotel. We went out to lunch there as it was near the office and an American with whom we were working asked for a ham and cheese omelette. The waitress said that they couldn't do that, ham omelette or cheese omelette only. The American became antsy and demanded to see the manager who affirmed that they could not produce the dish requested. (Which, I must admit showed zero initiative). So the frustrated customer gave his order: "One ham omelette and one cheese omelette - hold the eggs on the cheese omelette".

On the flip side we went to Toby at Gorleston while on hols last week and my daughter really wanted a raspberry ice cream but it wasn't on the kids desert menu, the waitress made one especially for her with the rasberry sauce from the eaton mess :)
