  • If the worst comes to the worst, stick a finger up the dog's bum!

That'll soon stop them attacking your dog.

The rules on this must vary from area to area and county to county, I've only ever reported one dog owner for allowing their dog to roam and attack other dogs, the owner was dealt with.
My complaint was treated very seriously as my girl lost one of her legs in the attack (she has since passed on).
I tend not to get any problems whatso ever now, as most people normally panic to get their dogs on a lead if they see me coming with ours, not that they are aggressive or anything (my boy is the sweetest softest boy you could ever imagine) his size is a brilliant deterrent :D

If I were ever in that situation again, I would do anything to protect my dogs from injury within reason.

Sadly the police rarely get involved in dog on dog injuries - it is seen as damage to property (no, I don't agree with them) and as such, any losses should be recovered in the civil court. They probably wouldn't prosecute if a person got bitten as they broke up a dog fight as that could be seen as self inflicted rather than an attack IYSWIM.

When it comes to breaking up an attack/fight the safest thing to do is too stay as far away from the teeth end as possible - I've removed dogs by their tails and with bigger dogs lifted the back legs (have to say, it wasn't particularly successful) and if the dog really has a hold of the 'victim' dog you can do a lot of damage to muscles etc by dragging them apart. If the dog has a collar on the most effective way of getting them to let go is to pull the collar as high up their neck as possible and then twist it to restrict their breathing (severely if necessary) and they will let go.

A bit of noise, water and a few kicks will break up 90% of fights IME but if it is a full on attack it can enrage the dog further and make things worse.

    Chucknorris,what did the owner do???????

She didn't do anything she just stood there (her dog was on a long retractable lead and lept onto my dog as he walked past it). I was so focused on getting that dog off mine that I really didn't pay much attention to her, plus it was all over in seconds

When we asked the police what would happen WHEN this creature attacks a child their answer was "we will have to cross that bridge when it happens"They also told us that we could not carry a crow bar.

A crow bar is too obvious, a long sharpened pencil or solid metal torch would be better as they could be carried quite innocently. A stick would also be ideal but my dog sees this as something to run after and he wouldn't give up trying to get it from me, so that wouldn't work for me.

I hasten to add though that I love dogs and have no wish to harm them. But if it came down to a life threatening situation for my dog I would not hesitate to take action.

hhhhm, I have three smaller dogs who all mind their own business but are regularly picked on by larger breeds. In particular a pack of 4 german shepherds. They picked out my toy poodle, separated him from the others and proceeded to try and eat him!!(thats what it looked like anyway...:o)
I didn't even stop to think before running over and kicking and thumping the darlings. Owner comes waddling over as fast as her short fat legs could carry her and starts with "Oi, stop kicking my ***** dogs!"
It gets more and more unprintable from there I'm afraid but I haven't seen her since.

When my Standard Poodle got attacked we were lucky he was only a pup as he just wriggled around and the Pit could not get a hold on him.He was after my Mini Poodle but he was to fast and just ran off.The owner was the other side of the park with his other pit and just called him back and walked on.My hubby, who is a very big man kicked it and it was like kicking a solid brick wall. This dog is still walking around off the lead with his drug dealing owner.Says a lot for the laws in this country.

I have heard similar advice. I presume its because technically a dog is property, so you have the right to defend it? I ve always assumed this. My Sister was looking after my dog for the day(small caviler king charles spaniel whos shy) my sister walks into the bus depo with the dog(they let this) when some drunk guy comes up with his dog who starts harashing mine. sniffing, growling when my dog walks away(shes flight, not fight!) and then the dog tries and attack my dog, the guy just laughing. Now, i love animals, i adore them and wouldnt never hurt them unless i had to. But ive always told my sister, if a dog attacks mine a) try not to pick it up it will only make it worse(the dog attacking goes for tails, your hand ect) b) try and pull her away. On this occasion the dog wasnt on a lead so she couldnt escape. So she kicked the dog. Not hard, but enough for it to stop. Like i said, i love animals, but if i was being attacked id do the same, and as my dog is small, she could quite easily be killed.

edit: the only time i carry a "weopon" is when shes in season, and its a walking stick. Where i am people let the dogs roam. But i would like to add i wouldnt hit a dog with it(and havnt) but use it to block the dog incase it came near her, the males dont seem aggressive but its just to block them away until i can pick her up and walk away.
