What to do if your dog is attacked?

Does anyone actually know if the advice I received from the police last year is an acceptable procedure or just one rogue policemen's opinion?
Last year a lurcher pounced on my lab/springer cross and bit his neck and would not let go, it happened very fast but within 3 seconds I was pulling the lurchers mouth open and got him off. I knew it would bite me, and it did, but I would rather be bitten than my dog suffer an even worse injury. I ended up having to go to hospital which wasted about 4 hours of our Sunday including the travelling time. I also had to take my dog to the vets the next day for stitches which cost £100. We reported it the police who said they couldn't really do anything and added that instead of forcing the dogs mouth open I should have started kicking it! This to me seemed very bizarre advice. But now I am in two minds about it, as I said to protect my dog I don't mind getting bit, but if I can simply kick the other dog, I have to ask myself why should I accept being bitten?

Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop

My dog got attacked a few years ago by a trained fighting pit bull in my local park.We reported it to the police who informed us that they knew about the dog,who belonged to a well known drug dealer and could do nothing. This dog went on to attack my friends dog really badly and yet again the police did nothing. In the end we just went somewhere else and carried a crow bar.The police are useless when it comes to dogs attacking other dogs they just dont care.0

I find your experiences with the police on this matter to be disturbingly worrying. But it does explain a few things.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

When we asked the police what would happen WHEN this creature attacks a child their answer was "we will have to cross that bridge when it happens"They also told us that we could not carry a crow bar.0

to seperate dogs, take the attackers back legs and raise the back end of the dog in the air. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

in theory, it is taken more seriously when a human is attacked rather than another dog. did you know ther person whose dog it was?
we have two lurchers and both have been attacked (one once, one twice) whilst on the lead by other dogs.
on all occasions we have needed to go to the vets and pay for treatment. on one occasion we knew the owners, who later came round to apologise but did not offer to pay for treatment.
one time was a really serious neck injury, which proved to be expensive and required weeks of treatment. we were upset and in a hurry to get to the vets at the time, but later tried to locate the owner unsuccessfully. we had planned to give their details to our insurers so at least they could try to claim from them.
we have also had people try to buy/steal the dogs from us - they admitted they had entered our property. we reported this matter to the local police - not sure what if anything they did (they sort of knew who was responsible), but that has not happened again.
i too, have generally found the police to be unhelpful when reporting most smaller crimes and/or areas of concern:(0 -
Our Westie got attacked by next doors Staffie and it took 3 of us to get it off her. She is now frightened of other dogs. There are a couple of Dobermans in the next avenue to ours, one of them was allowed to roam. It went after my dog and I managed to run into a house when someone had opened their door (luckily they were very understanding). We informed the police but they would not do anything. They said that the offending dog had to attack and be reported 3 times before something could be done. It subsequently went on to attack a Labrador and Brichon. All that happened was that the owners had to move to the dog onto another unsuspecting owner.0

My dog was attacked as a pup and never forgot it,he hated other dogs and we had to keep him away.He was a gentle loving Standard Poodle.Maybe if the police took more notice of us good and caring dog owners these evil creatures might not go on to attack young kids.0
