If they refuse to do their jobs, threaten to refuse to do yours.
They'll soon help if they think you're not going to cook tea, wash their dirty pants etc
there was the day I went on strike as I got fed up of being told I could do as I liked. Hubby was away at work, so I took to the sofa with a book and a glass of wine!!
When hubby rang the kids were so cross because they had to have cereal for tea and in the words of my youngest son "She is trying to kill us!" because they didnt have a cooked meal :rotfl:
Strangely since then they have been more co-operative :TFree/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -

probably doesn't help that my husband is as bad as the kids.
You are not alone!!
DS who's 12 thinks that doing anything to help around the house is tantamount (sp?) to torture.
DD who's 4 thinks that being told to put toys away is spoken in a foreign language.
As for DH ummm....... worse than useless comes to mind! In fact he makes more flippin mess than the 2 kids put together. :mad:0 -
Oh dear, I am really mean with my children, aged 8 and 5.
They get 10p age per week.
For this I expect both to make their beds, take their dirty washing to the bathroom, and pick up their bath towels.
And the 8 year old is expected to make his own cereal in the morning.
The money is essentially for sweeties, as I tend to buy them everything else that I deem they need.
However, my 8 year old has taken to save his money and he buys magazines now instead of sweets.:D0 -

My mum expected me to do various household chores, but didn't expect my brother (1 year younger) to do anything...and I still don't think Dad knew where the kettle was!
Surprisingly enough I didn't do what was requested of me...;)
She was very unimpressed, and cried about 'where she'd gone wrong...'
I said she hadn't gone wrong, that she'd brought me up to see myself as equal to my brother...if she asked him to do household stuff, then I'd do it too.
She never asked him to do anything, and therefore she was still tidying both of our rooms until we went to university...:eek:The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0 -
Eeek I think I am a mean mummy!
My 4 year old, has to
Get dressed nicely (including putting her dirty clothes in the basket in another room)
Open the curtains downstairs (the ones in her room are too high)
Tidy away her plates after meals or snacks
Tidy away her toys each day
Make her bed (or have a good attempt)
And all that for a row of stickers

My kids have to earn their pocket money so they learn the value of it. I was always just given money and am useless with it.
My eldest gets between 20p-£1 per job, depending on the job which she gets at the end of the week, she chooses to put it all in her bank account as she is saving for a complete fencing outfit which is nearly £200 and a pottery kiln which is £800. we told her we can't afford to buy her those items and give her chore money so she has to save for them herself.
My youngest is currently earning to "buy a hammer" (he's 3 bless him) as he loves woodwork.
The middle two earn very little because they refuse to do chores, so no chores, no money. They will soon complain when it comes to shopping time though.
As for running a house, when my mother couldn't be bothered to do housework when I was a kid (she would rather sit, smoke and knit) dad would with-hold housekeeping money. He would do the food shopping for that week so she couldn't spend the money on crap! The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

children are part of the family and in our family we all work together to get the jobs done, I am not paying my children to tidy up their mess or to contribute to the home that they live in, they make their beds, they take the dishes into the kitchen when we have finished eating, they lay the table, feed the cats, tidy their bedrooms etc, it's all part of being a family in my books
they also don't get any pocket money, if they want something then more often than not they get it (within reason)0 -
Thanks again all for your replies.
I am at a loss with my daughter, she is in a world of her own, a different planet maybe. She does what she wants when she wants. At the moment I am refusing to go in her room apart from to kiss her goodnight but I trip over her rubbish on the floor (and I know it might not be rubbish to her). If she wants clothes washing they have to be put into her wash basket outside her room at the weekend.
How do I correct this and get her to WANT to help?

what we do when the children decide they are not going to tidy their room is tell them if they don't that all of the stuff that is not in the place it should be will be thrown out, so we go through the huffing and puffing and then out come the black bin bags and I march up to their room and start putting things in the bags, it's suprising how quickly they can tidy up when their toys are threatened with the bin and the begging not to throw things out
have you tried this as it works with my children?0 -

It worked for me! My Dad said he was going to tidy my room every saturday, by binning everything on the floor. I only called his bluff once and learnt my lesson. I've since used it with my niece to good effect.
But you have to be willing to go through with the threat after you've made it. No chickening out when you start thinking about how much you've spent on those clothes you are chucking out! When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0
