Should I pass up this opportunity?

I recently graduated (this July) after completing three very hard years of work at university. I have now been selected/headhunted as a possible candidate for a paid internship due to start early september, however I would need to attend an interview. The problem is that i am not yet sure what career area i want to go into, and am not at all sure this is the job for me, although i have relevant experience.

My parents think i should go for it as the pay is quite good, and i might not get any more decent offers in the current job market. However i would have liked a bit more time off to consider my options and relax after three stressful years. Am i being stupid passing up this opportunity?

Many thanks in advance.

    Yes!
It's not as if whatever you take on now you will be stuck doing for the rest of your life - if you hate it with a passion you will be able to choose something else, and from a stronger position (i.e. with experience) than you are in now. Who knows - you may love it! At the very least go to the interview, it will be invaluable experience, and you have to start somewhere. Good luck!

Not gonna hurt you to go for the interview, you might not even get accepted. Still worth going for the experience though and you can still turn it down if you get an offer? =]

depends on who you want to finance you whilst you consider your options.

If its mum & dad and they are daft to do so, then yes.

If its the taxpayer then no

Many would be very annoyed that you would even think of passing up this opportunity, however you are obviously very doubtful about the job and I would not blame you for not taking up the opportunity. A few months or even a year of doing not very much after graduating is nothing when you are your age and I cannot see any good employer thinking bad of it. In fact it is likely to help your chances of getting a good decent job in the future as when you are ready for going for interviews in something you are really interested in, you will interview well.

Personally, if I were interviewing, I'd look at someone who had taken an internship (even if in a different area) and look at someone who had sat around doing nothing (at least that's how it would look), and I know which of them I'd want to employ. These are tough times, and unless you have lots of money hanging around to fund you for a bit, you basically need to take what you can get.

On the 1 hand you have a posible internship although you need to attend an interview and the other hand you have no job as of yet and you could be claiming jsa and looking for work. I know which 1 id do, id rather be in work as its easier to find work than out of work.

Let me know how you feel at 66 (or whatever the retirment age - if there is one - when you get there) after a life of stressful years in work.

You have an opportunity - they have only offered you an interview, so it isn't exactly "in the bag". This may be one of many chances - or it may be the only one you get. The world is competitive - it doesn't wait around for you to relax. While you are relaxing your former collegaues are snapping up whatever jobs they can get.

I can understand you wanting a bit of time out, but you only have to look on this board to see how much a lot of people are struggling to get any sort of job.

You may not get it anyway, so at the very least you should attend the interview - the longer time it is between uni and interviews the more nervous you will get about how to get through them. At least do this now and you've got one under your belt.

If you are offered the internship then you need to think hard about the benefits this will give you. Valuable experience and money while you still live at home that you can save for your future - whether that be housing or travelling or whatever. You don't know what you want to do for your career, well trying this might give you insight even if it turns out to be that it is NOT what you want to do.

I honestly think it's too good an opportunity to pass up and it's something you may regret if you don't at least interview.

    Do it!!!!

You say you are just Graduating - with the world in its current state you don't know when the next opportunity will present itself. You could well end up regretting not taking a chance to get some experience that will only help you in the future.
