Not due for another 17 1/2 weeks, but am trying to be MSE and have written a list of essentials i think i'll need and so i can look for bargains when they come along am now thinking of brands etc.
I plan to breast feed, but figure i'll need a steriliser for if i express or combination feed when baby gets a bit older....so which ones would you recommend and which should i stay clear of.
As i said i plan to express occasionally. Manual versus electric ???
Also i've heard bad things about the electric tommee tippee expresser, being noisy and not as good for top heavy women!!
Look forward to your views!! Thanks

With DD I bought a manual tomee tippee closer to nature pump and it was fine, did the job but I expressed quite a lot and it did become a bit tiresome LOL. When I fell pregnant with DS I wanted an electric one and got a TT one again, it was in the Asda baby event for £20 and I think it's great, but as you have heard it is quite noisy . With both you get a microwavable steriliser which will take you pump bits plus 1 bottle and teat.
Oh and I am er top heavy (very)and when I first seen it I thought no way is that going to fit but I have no problems with it:D

I wouldn't buy anything just yet, you might not get on with breastfeeding for all kinds of reasons and it will be a big waste of money if you spend a fortune on a breast pump. The Tommee Tippee microwave steriliser is on offer frequently and is quite cheap and does the job fine, but if you are a sucessful breastfeeder you won't need one as they don't need to be used after the first few months. In the USA they say only sterilse for 3 months and my health visitor told me that once a baby starts putting its hands on the floor and eating toys it is pointless to sterilise bottles although I know a lot of people do sterilise for a lot longer.0

Personally I sterilised DD's bottles until she no longer had them, the milk deposits can be left behind and sterilising is the best way to make sure the bottle is properly clean and prevent a bad tummy bug."That's no reason to cry. I planned to breastfeed, but in the end it didn't work out due to not being able to get nursing bras in a big enough size (am somewhat top heavy myself and once my milk came in.............:eek:). I had planned to express and had a single electric pump that came with my Breastflow bottles. That lasted me about 4 weeks and then I bought the Medela pump in style double pump, which brought my 30 minute sessions down to 10 mins at a time. I used that for all feeds until LO was 6.5 months. If anyone had told me I'd have expressed in airplane toilets, motorway service car parks, in the toilets at Ferrari World............. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

LOL!! The medela pump does get the best reviews I think?"That's no reason to cry. One cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad."0 -
hiya i always had avent seam steriliser with all 3 of my kids and the best breast pump i ever bought was the medela mini electric fabulous to aid breastfeeding to help milk flow if baby not getting enough off or cant latch i used the pump so much of a help to me to get over the first few weeks of breastfeeding when you get the probs. After 2 weeks we were prob free and were still feeding now at 13 months. I had everything before i started as had c section with all of mone so cant get out to buy stuff in first few weeks. Having the pump meant i was sucessful at breastfeeding. I had a hand express avent one with my other 2 which was herrendous tosay the least if fell to bits every time i used it and my arm ached like mad after 10 mins of pumping for a trickle of milk. Good luck.Jan 2015 GC £267/£260

I couldn't get on with breastfeeding as I barely had any milk so I bottle fed. I bought the Avent steam steriliser. Its supposed to keep things sterile for 6 hours if you don't open it. However, DS needed feeding every 3 hours, so I was constantly having to switch it on. It packed in within about 3 weeks of DS being born. I bought a cheap bucket and lid from the £££ shop and used the sterilising tablets. The good thing about this method was that I always had sterile equipmentv when I needed it (although you have to change the water every day which is a pain.
I bought a cheap TOmmy Tippee breast pump from the ASDA baby even and it came with a small travel microwave steriliser. This was really handy in case I needed to sterilise somthing quickly, plus I could take it with me when I visited family.0 -
I'm rather top heavy (check out the NCT for bras if you're having issues) and I used the Medela Swing and also bought an Avent Breastfeeding Kit. After 3/4 weeks of no latching on, he finally got the hang of breastfeeding and I didn't really use it much after that, they just wouldn't let me out of hospital without the pump.,___,

In hospital they gave me the Medela Symphony to use. Ive had a look and this costs over £700
not very MSE! Ive heard other good things about Medela, if I was to go for one Id go for a double pump as it is mega time saving!
I have the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature one and IVe had numerous problems with it so far but one was my own fault as I hadnt put the bits in right. It is noisy, I have to cover it over with a couple of towels to down the noise so it doesnt wake the baby in the night but can still hear it.
I was watching a Medela double pump on ebay but forgot about it as baby had me up late lol:j0
