Water softener systems - which one to install

I am thinking about having a water softener system installed and had a quote of between £1200 & £1400 using a salt type. I wonder if anyone can advie if this is there is a cheaper optiion as this seems a huge amount? The cost to install is £195 so the bulk of the cost is the system itself. Plus I've heard of potassium type which is better for your health than salt ones. Help anyone:shocked:
