Nokia Mobile - Technical Advice Needed!

Wonder if anyone can help. My partner recently got a phone on a new contract with Vodafone - they said her old mobile should be unlocked if she wanted to sell it or pass it on.

As I have an ancient mobile I tried my sim card in (Tesco PAYG) and it worked to send texts and make calls but none of the other functions such as the camera would work. Also the phone still had some of her old texts and contacts in it.

There doesn't seem much point me having it if I can't use the extra functions as it just does the same job as my old one. Can anyone help?

The camera etc shouldn't be affected by a sim card as it isn't (or shouldn't be) network dependant due to it not being related to the tariff or service provider.
The reason it's still got her messages and contacts on is because she needs to delete them.

This is what I thought, which is baffling me as it worked fine for her when she used it
