My wife has relatives in South Africa and has been told that she could buy two Skype phones and send one over there.

Then she could make free calls

is this correct ?

Is the Skype system good and reliable ?

When she phones now, she goes through a third party site and only pays 5p / minute to a SA mobile which is cheap enough, but free is a wee bit bette.

thanks

that's not exactly what you want to do, esp if it is a mobile phone you are sending.

do the people you are calling have an internet connection and a computer?
if they do then all you have to do is have them install skype on their computer and you install skype on your computer, one of you add the other one and that's it make free calls all day, all night, every day.

if they dont have an internet connection or computer then you can still install skype and use skype credit to call SA for 4.1ppm or you can pay for 400mins and only pay 1.7ppm.

what you may be thinking is some phones can install the skype app (iphone, ipod touch, ipad, android phones, and some symbian (nokia) phones) then any party can use that for free skype calling.
eg they in SA have skype on their computer and you have skype on your ipod touch you can through wifi call their computer for free through skype or use skype credit to call a landline in SA.

have a read of skypes website for more info also in all situations you can also video call them if they and you have a webcam or if you have an iDevice with a front facing camera (ipod touch 4th gen, iphone 4 or ipad 2) also some android phones can also video call (but not symbian phones)

but you dont even have to use skype if both of you have windows live messenger that can also do voice and video calling and so can gmail through google talk

    No, they don't.

Maybe my wife is a bit mxed up, as another friend in SA, who has a computer told her she uses Skype all the time. I think it was her, who told her all about it.

I think my wife thinks .. all that is needed are two 'Skype' mobile phones, or at least normal phones with this Sype software included.

In the uk all you have to do is buy a 3 three network mobile skype phone they are about 40 pounds

Three network does skype for free on pay as go without topping up now the problem is the south african side of things I dont know what there telphone charges are for using skype on there mobile network and will really need a south african sim.

Now you can from your skype three network call there pc or if they have a skype device which dont require a pc even smart tvs by samsung and lg are even coming with skype built in.
  • Using Skype on a mobile means data usage. Three use Skype as way of hooking punters into their carp network that is totally pants.

So sending a Three mobile with Skype on it to South Africa would mean using a local sim card (thus deactivating the free Skype on Three) or paying some hefty data charges for roaming, if Three have roaming in SA.

My parents have had three for 2 years with skype they are both in the uk and dont have many problems with and have never toped up in all that time so dont know what the other side of there networks like. Like I said before it maybe possible to use skype on south african sim but dont know if anyone offers three skype over there.
