Free timber/wood for carpentry work

Hi, I need to build a large shelf in my attic - approximately 7ft X 3ft. The shelf needs to be reasonably strong as there will be several boxes placed on it.
The shelf doesn't have to be free standing i.e. can utilise pillar supports if that makes life easier.
I can probably figure out how to do the work myself but I was wondering where I might be able to find some free wood/timber for the project. Cheers.

Freecycle is the first stop for anything free, quite a few people will have some timber in the shed that they don't need and somebody will probably message you and tell you that they're throwing away an old wardrobe 'if it'll be of any use'.0

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.:hello:0 -
You could try some local shops to see if they will let you have some pallets.0
-
Ask your neighbours, especially if you have something to swop (labour or materials), put notice in local shop or at work. Try demolition site, though they will charge.0
-
Have you seriously looked at the rubbish wood that is used to make pallets.
Any wood in the attic should always have a train set nailed to it anyway."I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -
try a building site or a scaffold company for any old scaffold boards.
trying to get 7ft long bits of wood, free, any other way will be a problem.Get some gorm.0 -
Don't forget, trying to get a 7' length of wood through the door, round the corner, up the stairs, along the corridoor and up through the loft hatch may well be nigh on impossible. You may have to build the shelf in two halves (which might actually make sourcing the wood a lot easier!)
I built some shelving in my last loft and made it slatted (like in an airing cupboard). This not only made it easier to get the smaller pieces of wood up into the loft, but also kept the weight down. You do not want to put too much weight up there as it is likely to never have been engineered to take a big load.
