butter prices

What is happening to the price of butter? Tescos 'economy' butter has gone up from 83p to £1.27 in less than a year - more than 50% increase! And funnily enough all the other supermarkets have put their prices up at each step to exactly the same price. Whatever happened to competition?
Time for MSE to investigate I think.

I do a lot of baking and have also noticed this rise. Tesco's own butter has risen 14p in one week. All butter brands seem to have risen quite sharply in a very short space of time.0

Pound to a penny the farmers aren't getting any more for their milk though!

I went to buy some smart price butter for baking and was completely taken a back by the price. I ended up buying stork which was far cheaper.0

The diesel deliveries cost more, grain costs more, and staff wages are higher.

My Asda has downsized their butter section giving us less choice and leaving mainly large & expensive butters to choose from, not even their own in 250g size !***Dont save what is left after spending, spend what is left after saving***0

What is it about the price of butter that gets people so upset? The last time round I seem to remember some poster getting very upset with me when I tried to point him in the direction of some rational discussion of the subject.
Never mind, value butter appears to be £1.10 at both ASDA and Sainsbury's at the moment, which is what it was at the beginning of May. I got some marked down Anchor in Co-Op for 50p yesterday and stuck it straight in the freezer.0 -
I cant believe it, (turning into victor meldrew)
need to buy some butter type spread,
usually like to get i cant believe its not butter
or a flora type spread.
weve used up the stock from the freezer,
I stocked up last year when we got 2x500 g packs for around £1, now over £1 or up to £1.50 per tub!
Wheres the best deal ?
anybody any advice
thanx0 -
Try Aldi. Reasonable quality and a great deal cheaper. They do unsalted too.
What's really galling is that British dairy farmers are forced to tip away millions of gallons of milk because the EU 'says so'!"Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0 -
