The rocketing price of butter

I had to do a double-take in a branch of Budgens, yesterday. There on the shelf was a stack of Lurpak butter priced at £1.75 a packet. Surely the highest yet?

Not too long ago, Lurpak and the other major butter brands were regularly on twofer offers - twofer a pound. Now they are all over £1.50 a packet and even the supermarket own brands are over £1.

So what's the excuse? It can't be transport costs as they are a small fraction of the eventual price of a pack. It's not higher tax and don't even think of suggesting to a dairy farmer that it's his fault.

Someone is responsible for this scalping and neither the media nor the government seem at all interested.

On the OS thread, they stock up on whoopsied cream and make theirs for pennies. Am hoping to do so too if I drop on in the reductions!

The price of butter has gone up. Butter is like anything else; oil, tuna, government bonds, second hand books; people buy and sell, there is a market, and supply and demand sets the price.

Apparently UK bulk butter prices broke "all previous levels" in the past few days, "due to limited UK production, strong Continental demand and continued weakness in Sterling". It seems that across the EU as a whole, butter production is insufficient to meet demand.

Strange - they left out speculation and market rigging. Can't imagine why.
