All smartphones use data routinely without asking you. Depending on your usage and on what you actually want you can:
- switch the data off in your phone;
- ask the network to disable data for your account;
- change the provider (e.g. 20p/day for up to 20Mb at giffgaff);
- switch from PAYG to pay monthly (sim-only tariffs with data are available from £6/month).

Or change to a Pay and Go tariff that has free or inclusive data. For example O2 and Vodafone both do a Text and Web tariff with 500megabytes of free data when you top up.0
