Hijack this log - please can you help!

I've been following the instructions to get rid of spyware/malware on the main sticky but it doesn't seem to be working and I'm getting desperate.

Please would someone be kind enough to have a look at my hijack this log and tell me if you can see something that shouldn't be there. I've spent hours over the last 2 days running all the programs such as Spybot, AVG, Roguescanfix etc and did them in safe mode. I got rid of the gremlin taking over my home page but I'm still left with a flashing ? in my bottom right hand tray, together with pop ups telling me I have a virus/malware etc and asking me to click on it. I had the same problem about 6 months ago but followed instructions from the experts on here and the problem went away.

I don't know what else to run to fix the problem and would really appreciate some help if possible.

Try posting it here http://www.hijackthis.de/it should tell you if anything is 'iffy'
  • I would suggest that you post at a forum with a human at the other end to offer assistance.

Your java needs updating - do when the rest is sorted

If you do legit have people remotely helping you then fine - otherwise click the items above and set to remove/clear.
Start Hijackthis and place a check next to the above items If there.
Close all browser windows and shut down all other programs that show in the taskbar.(even Folders)

Can you do a Complete startup log ( Config Tools >> Misc Tools Tick both options ) as well for me after rebooting and doing a new HJT log ty

    Hi Debs
1 Can you confirm that you chat online using several Chat Clients - AOL, ICQ, ICQLite, MS Messenger and AIM (AOL Instant Messenger )?
2 Have you recently tried to upgrade to IE 7 ?
    3 You have a Chicony Keyboard ?

There are some things that could be removed but are not as malicious as the previous files - Are you still having any problems ?
    Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.

yes, my kids and I use the chat services listed above.
Yes I did try to upgrade to IE 7 but hated it and went back to IE6
I don't know what a Chicony keyboard is though :o Mine came with the PC and just has the brand name on it, nothing else.

The spyware/malware has gone as far as I can tell, because the icon in my bottom tray has disappeared and so have the pop-ups.

Thankyou for your help last night. I thought you had gone offline so disappeared too - sorry.

this line in the first log showed an infection (not in the 2nd log but to be sure follow the below)

    O21 - SSODL: buprestidae - {b59f3ba4-98da-4b5f-8a2d-7b56fb11140b} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cthkpcv.dll

this is an infection called antivermin. to be sure it has totally gone can you follow this

    Removing Antivermins
To remove Antivermins you need a tool called SmitFraudFix aoutside.gif. Download this to your desktop before we begin the removal process. You also need a tool that can open Zip files. Windows XP can do this for you automatically or you can download 7-Zip aoutside.gif (a free compression utility).
    1. Extract the files out of SmitfraudFix.zip.
    2. After extractions you should find a folder on your desktop that contains 11 files.
      virusburster_2_thumb.jpg
    3. Reboot your PC into Safe Mode.
    4. Once the PC has rebooted open the SmitfraudFix folder on your desktop and double-click on SmitfraudFix.cmd.
      virusburster_3_thumb.jpg
    5. Press any key to continue.
      virusburster_4_thumb.jpg
    6. You'll now be faced with 6 options:
      virusburster_5_thumb.jpg
Press 2 to start Clean (safe mode recommended) followed by ENTER.
      virusburster_6_thumb.jpg
    7. If you are running Windows XP you'll see the Disk Cleanup start up and clean out your temp files and Temporary Internet Files folder.
    8. When asked if you want to clean the registry, press Y followed by ENTER.
      virusburster_7_thumb.jpg
    9. Reboot your PC.
Your PC should now be free of antivermins.

  • Browntoa - thankyou for the advice. I have just run the above exactly as you stated. Do I need to post the log from Smitfraudfix or not?

might be worth it out of interest...I was concerned that if the infection was still there it would re-infect...these sort of infections are a "gateway" to other infections

I see it mentions the buprestidae word in the log - does that mean it was still lurking?
