wirless problems

i got a belkin wireless G router along with a wireless laptop today, and am having massive problems setting the router up.step 1 is to take the wire that connects the modem to the pc and plug it in the router.i am with tiscali and the modem has only two connections.the one that goes to the pc only fits in the pc with a usb connection that doesn't fit into the router.i have looked for any other solutions but the only other wire going from the modem is going into the phone socket.i might be totally missing something here but ive no idea what to do.the belkin phone number is a wrong one(0080022355460).i have looked at all the info on here and get basically what to do but if the wires dont fit what can i do next?my laptop is fine while wired up but as i have 2 desktops already i wanted this to be portable!!i feel like screaming right now

  • pc network card -- ethernet cable -- router -- phone cable -- adsl filter -- bt socket.

ditch the modem, and forget about usb.

then go to http://192.168.2.1 and setup wpa encryption.

This assumes that you have an ethernet network card and have bought an adsl router for BT lines.

If you don't have a network card in the PC's ..

  • I was referring to the PC's..

Doesn't the laptop have an ethernet port anyway, as well as wireless built-in?

  • Which router have you bought?

  • Centrino is wireless out of the box so that's all cool

Just to be clear is it a router/modem or just a router?
If it's a router/modem then as said already forget the modem completely, it's out of the picture now. The router replaces the modem and the 2 desktops plug into it with network cables from their ethernet ports to the ports on the router.

Just read your new post, so you're struggling to hook up the modem to the router cos the modem is usb only and the router doesn't have a usb input but presumably has an ethernet input?
    Ummm...tricky ;)

Does the modem definitely only have a usb output? It hasn't got an ethernet connection too, which is what you'd use to connect to the router?

    You're aiming for:

    phone - modem - router - desktops

    *laptop anywhere*

PS sorry if that's stating the bleedin' obvious!

its a belkin wireless g router, no modem included.
Pingusan the modem has a usb thing to connect to the pc and a ethernet thing to connect to the phone.it all seemed really easy to me at first as well , but this usb thing means that i cant connect the modem to the router and the pc.I asked the bloke at currys if i needed a combined router/modem and he said not but now....:confused:
ps apologies if it semms like im being thick here but i am genuinely puzzled.

  • if you have a bt line, you need a wireless adsl router. If you have cable, you need a cable/dsl wireless router.

Without the model number, I don't know what you've bought, but if it doesn't have a connection for the phone line, you've probably got the wrong one, so take it back and swap it.
