o2 and mac codes

I've decided to change my isp from o2 to bt as bt can offer a better deal.
I emailed o2 requesting they send me a mac code and I received this reply
'Your O2 Home Broadband Access account is connected via a BT's equipment as your exchange doesn't have our equipment. So, we need to follow some technical procedures which are possible only when you call us. If we process the MAC key over the email, it may be possible that the request won't go through. You can call us on 0800 230 0202. It's a free call from landline and O2 mobiles. Remember to drop the first zero if you're calling from a mobile phone.'
Now it doesn't make sense to me as with an o2 account going through BT's exchange I've been receiving emails - this email in particular with no problems for several years !

They mean they don't have an LLU presence at your exchange, so you've got re-branded BT Broadband.0
