Well, the RSPCA can't really win whatever they do. If they stop the TV adverts and mailshots their income will be reduced and the work they do will suffer.

They are criticized for spending money on education and other campaigns, which takes it away from rehoming, but if people aren't educated then the problem will get worse.

    .

the money they spend on education, other campaigns and building fancy offices has nothing to do with rehoming.
Any money that gets paid to 'the' RSPCA goes into their bank and sits there, it doesn't go to the rescue shelters that they run in our towns. If you see somebody from the RSPCA collecting in the town centre then that money goes to the rescue, but all the donations from monthly subscriptions goes in the bank.
They also ran a campaign in Scotland but they don't do any work in Scotland, that's the SSPCA. So Scottish people were donating money to the RSPCA while the SSPCA were still struggling for funds.

So no, stopping the advertising doesn't make their work suffer, the RSPCA being greedy make their work suffer.

i probably dont know enough to comment fully but can only tell you of my experience.

i lost my cat in august last year and was silly and grief stricken to want a another cat straight away.

i had heard negative things about the rspca so rather short sightedly, thought i would phone the local small independent cat rescues to support them. i found them quite patronising to me, they obviously thought it was too soon to look for another cat (which is probably correct), told me that a new cat 'wasnt a replacement' for my old cat, questioned why i wanted another cat, when i described how my other cat was probably grieving and had never been alone before, told me that she would probably want some time alone,,, etc etc, then told me they would have to get back to me and waited ages to do so

in the meantime, i took myself (in tears) round the rspca rescue place which i honestly found to be clean, large, brand new pods where the cats were. to find no kittens at all (i didnt want a kitten) and lots of adult cats, one was about 11 i think.

anyway, i found a 5 year old female, her card said she was ok with dogs which was our main concern, we loved the 11 year old but he couldnt be with other cats.

so we adopted her. i found the staff to be really sympathetic to me, they understood the need to get another cat straight away (it was 3 weeks since my old cat had died). they allowed us to bring the dog in to see if she reacted ok to him.

now she has taken her place as head of the household.

so i know of and understand the criticisms of them but can only say that i saw lots of adult cats ready for rehoming and naturally they kept the kittens away to give the adults a better chance of getting homes. i think the day we took ours home, the 11 year old was going home with a family too, so we were pleased to see that

Aw Puddy, sorry about the death of your cat a year ago. Your new 5 yrs old puss has landed on her paws coming to live with you!

she really has actually, she lords it over everyone. we suspect that she may have been slightly mistreated where she was before. apparently she came into rescue because her owner died and i think that either the owner, or grandchildren had teased her.

the rspca described her as 'head shy' and she used to be wary of hands around her, plus when we used something that sounded like a spray (like an asthma inhaler) or perfume or something she would gag.

she doesnt do those things now, is less 'bitey' so i presume these where things that she was presented with in her previous home

In all honesty, what do people think that the charities should do?

If they rehome to all and sundry, they get slagged off as the animals could end up in another bad situation, if they never PTS - in theory - an animal could spend literally years in a kennel. That's no life for them. If they rehome dogs with a doubtful temperament and the dog bites someone they will be crucified. Even if they did do all the above there are still many more dogs/cats than there are homes for. I'm not a fan of the RSPCA for many reasons but I have never had a problem with them PTS difficult to rehome pets. Not to say that it isn't very sad or that many rescues could be a lot more flexible in their rehoming policies but the blame lies with whoever produced that now unwanted pet.

Since my cat went missing recently I become aware of

    1. how many well-loved cats go missing

    2. the lack of a proper coordinated register of missing cats and procedure for matching up lost and found or mistakenly called "abandoned" cats

I've reported my cat missing *everywhere* but I don't think any animal charities spend much time trying to match up lost cats with the ones they're looking after.

    I don't want to state the obvious...but I will.

the first thing any animal/charity/vet would do with a cat (or dog) found dead or alive is to check it for a microchip. If yours was chipped, then it would be scanned and returned to you if found.

yet another thread which turns into an attack on the people clearing up the mess left by irresponsible people. so what if the rspca made you feel inferior or patronised. no one can make you feel that way but yourself. and actually some people (chavs) shouldnt have pets because they are the people who have left thousands of unhomable staffies in kennels waiting to be pts. staffies are not seen as a family dog by the majority so unless you want to home all thirty thousand of them then theyll have to be pts. of course the owners of these dogs and the people responsible for the overbreeding of this unwanted breed should be charged the full cost of the vet bills.

You should be put to sleep for deciding that it's only chavs who put dogs in kennels and that staffies are an unwanted breed.
