AOL - How to cancel when they have no record of you

Hi,
I've been speaking to a friend today who is having a problem with AOL.
He has been paying a monthly charge to them for over 10 years without having a service. He left AOL and didn't notice that the money was still coming out of his account.
He has tried contacting AOL to cancel it, but they cannot find any record of him - even when he gives them the credit card number so they say they can't cancel it. Unfortunately he pays via a credit card and therefore he can't cancel it with his bank either unless he closes his account which is not what he wants to do.
Has anyone had this problem before or know anyone higher up in AOL that can help and possible get him a refund?
Thanks
Peter

Are you sure he is paying from a credit card, as no credit card is valid for that length of time. He must have more money than sense to not notice for 10 years !
He should get on to his credit card company and talk to them and ask why they would be paying on expired credit card.0 -
One option would be for the credit card company to perform a charge-back. He'll have to ask for that specifically, explaining the situation; that the transactions are either erroneous or fraud.
The trouble is that the card company simply won't believe him because it has been running for so long and the idea that he only just noticed doesn't make any sense.
If the card company won't play ball, then write to AOL by recorded delivery supplying all the available information and citing theft.
And if that still doesn't work then it's time to close the credit card account. If it has a balance, then open another one somewhere else and transfer that balance.
Should not be necessary but as above the charge-back protection won't really apply if it really has been being debited for such a long time as nobody would ever believe the story.0
