He had to get a letter off my parents confirming that he hadn't just moved in with them and had to show bank statements showing where he had paid rent into their account each month before he lost his job. He then got the single room rate of HB. This was about 3 years ago.
Well I was out of work 6 years ago and now for a year so unless they changed the unless they changed it in 2008 then I do not know how he managed it. I can only tell you the law and seems like they bent it for him and not me!!0 -

I don't know if he told the HB people this though.0 -
Well I don't know how or why, the only possible explanation is that mum told him that if he didn't pay rent he would have to move out as she would then have to rent his room out, because they couldn't afford the mortgage without the extra income. (my dad had been really ill and there was only one wage coming in)
I don't know if he told the HB people this though.
that's still one rule for one and one for EVERYONE ELSE0 -
I was told I am not entitled to it as I live with family. That is a fact and all I can say is your brother must have lied!!
Housing Benefit
You can claim Housing Benefit to help pay for your rent if your income and savings are below a certain level. If you're single and aged under 25 you can only get Housing Benefit for bed-sit accommodation or a room in shared accommodation. You cannot get Housing Benefit if you're living with your parents or other close relatives and paying rent to them.

I can't believe that my brother is the only person in the whole of the country that they have ever made an exception for. There must be SOME kind of loop hole or exemption.0 -
well what have you got to lose by applying anyway?

I did ask if I could apply a year ago and was told no and that's it0 -

if your mam is really struggling is it not an option for you to move out then? Is it just you and your mam living in the house? If so she would get a single persons discount on her CT and obviously food and utilities would be less for her. You would then be eligible for HB/CTB. Not an easy solution admittedly but it might be worth considering.0
