I don't know how she has used it with 512MB for this long without wanting to throw it out of the window in frustration.

TBF, that is often the normal state of things for Vista users! :D

    Kingston ValueRAM 1GB £10.29

Runs Vista Basic. 1.5GB RAM would be ok.

Some did a CPU upgrade here

If you go to the crucial website it runs an app that scans the computer and checks how many slots you have and what RAM is compatible. You don't have to buy from the main Crucial site but would confirm what RAM you need.

    HTH.

    DDR2 533MHz (PC2-4200) SODIMM or higher.

I put the DDR2 667 in my earlier post by mistake.

If the current configuration is 2 x 256MB RAM, then adding 1 GB will bring 1.25GB RAM. An huge improvement over the original 512MB, but I'd still recommend a clean install or a least a clean up to get the best from your limited resources.
Of course if you are ok with removing keyboard to install more RAM, it could help if you decide to enable the AERO interface.

The crucial scan shows one slot used - 512MB.

If you order from somewhere with free delivery, crucial has the option, then it is worth adding a 1GB stick to see what the improvement is, if you want more ram then you can add it.

With an extra 1GB, effectively tripling the current amount, the improvement is likely to be welcome

vista home basic and premium can run well on 1.5GB, Premium better on 2GB. Depends how much carp you bog it down with.....trim aero/sidebars/usual printer & phone apps etc. from startup, and you'll be fine :)

    Thanks for all the info.

Checked the laptop and decided to discard the existing RAM in the underside of the machine and purchase a 2GB from Crucial.

I looked at key board removal and thought it difficult.

I will find it much easier to replace the existing one.

I was very impressed with Crucial -
