Just Married...Joint bank account

Congrats
We share the same day then
One of our cheques was to mr and mrs but we haven't tried paying the money/cheques in yet because we hadn't decided what to do.MrsBunny wrote:just about to get married myself. Both of us had accounts at Lloyds, went in one day and the advisor closed down my hubbie to be account and added him to my account to make it joint. Quick and easy and done in about 5 minutes. It works for us becuase my hubby to be was out of work and everything came out of my account. when he picked up some work, he got paid weekly and it was annoying transferring money each week into my account. Now both in full time jobs, we have the joint account which our wages get paid into and we both have a cash card account with the co-op that we have our monthly 'pocket money' paid into. this money of £100 a month is used for any new clothes/magazines/cinema trips etc and we find it works for us. We also find that we can save better too as once that £100 in our cash accounts is gone, then its gone we can not touch the current account unless it is an emergency.
I personally think its down to how you work in your relationship. The above works for us, but may not work for you.
Thanks. Ideally, we would both like to keep our individual accounts and have a joint bank account. All wages, etc, will go into the joint bank account and we will give ourselves 'pocket money' like you described, to buy clothes, etc, every month.
We've made an appointment at Barclays for Monday to discuss it with them and see what we can do.0 -
You should be able to do whatever you want - no reason at all why Barclays shouldn't allow you a joint account as well as the two existing sole accounts. Conversely, no reason why they wouldn't allow you one joint account and no sole accounts. We've made an appointment at Barclays for Monday to discuss it with them and see what we can do.
Perhaps better to start with the third (joint) account and see how it goes. 33 years ago Mrs CBC and I started that way (albeit with NatWest) - after a couple of years we closed the sole accounts 'cos constantly transferring "pocket money" became too tedious, but obviously that doesn't suit every couple. Realistically, only time will tell which is best for you.0 -

Thanks, that's what we're thinking. I would hate for us to both close our own accounts and then find we want them back so hopefully we can get a joint account and then we'll arrange to get all of our monies paid into that one and see how it goes.0 -
Why don't you open a joint savings account not a bank account? Pay the cheque into that. You could even arrange it that money can only be withdrawn by both signatures, then you could use it for purposes you both agree on and leave the rest of your money separate.marywooyeah wrote: »I got married on saturday, and one of the cheques we got was made out to Mr and Mrs marywooyeah but when we went to cash it were we told we couldnt unless we had a joint bank account and would we like to get one.
it was a unanimous NO!!! most of our arguments throughout our relationship have been over him running out of money and wanting me to bail him out. he got a promotion so it hasnt been a problem for a while, but I want to keep our finances seperate. He pays the rent and I pay the bills, but I buy most of the food and things for our son and I dont think its fair that I could end up spending his money and he mine, I just think its fairer and easier to keep it seperate.0 -
that is a good idea, I will raise it with hubby.
hubby lol - can't get used to it!0
