Can anyone advise me re currency in Turkey.

I last went 3 years ago when I found the Turks prefer to accept Euros and Sterling than their own currency and at the time if you wanted to pay in Turkish Lira they would charge an extortionate exchange rate making it more expensive to pay this way.

Can anyone tell me if this is still the case, and if so whether it works out more expensive to pay for things in Euros/Sterling than if you pay in the local currency?

Many thanks!

I think its the other way around, you're better off to pay in Turkish Lira.

My friend is Turkish and he says that the reason that they are so happy to accept Euros and Sterling out in Turkey is because they give bad rates to give convert the Euros/Sterling to the Turkish Lira price (so they make a further profit on the transaction). Whereas when you pay in Lira, you are paying in the official local currency so they cant make a profit on the rate like they would if you paid in Euros/£/$.

Also the rate to buy Turkish Lira cash over here (or in Turkey) is great at the moment, so you will get great value for money :T
