  • £35 is very reasonable for the 'labour' (assuming it all works and they don't charge you extra for the problem).

Had you gone to a major high street chain (no names mentioned) and paid their prices, you'd really have something to complain about, and rightly so.

computerwoman.Have faith in the guy fixing your computer for you.He sounds like someone that knows what he is doing .
  • I cant help but post and my first post aswell, I cant believe someone with the name of computerwoman who says they can do the job themselves didnt its really annoying to hear someone who owns a PC but cant fix it moan about someone else who is doing a thorough job for a really reasonable price I reckon the lesson here is DIY if you may think your going to have a hissy fit.

Just relax as PCs are a pain in the bum sometimes just let the guy do his job, a job made much easier without anyone on his back, anyway I hope it gets fixed and stays fixed.

just to up-date you on whats happened, rang shop at 1.30pm they said they would install xp at no extra charge, and to pick the pc up at 4pm, when my son got to shop, the guy says sorry, it's not ready, so I rang shop just after then to find out what else was up, he said that while installing windows it restarted just before it had finished installing and that something else was wrong, but he did'nt know what yet as he'd never come across this sort of thing before, infact he'd never come across this before, so any suggestions would be gratefully received the guy in the shop said this wont cost any extra yeh right, and that I could collect it tomorrow, which is'nt possible as I have'nt got any transport now until tuesday, so I said I'd call back in on tuesday, the shop is 23 miles away from me, in another town.

I've had problems with PCs restarting before. One turned out to be the motherboard and the other was a faulty PSU.

This is why I learn how to do it myself.
So far the most expensive mistake I have made is burning our a processor chip by typing in the wrong number on the bios. That was about 7 years ago when I was building from scratch for the 1st time. It cost about £40 for a new processor so not the end of the world. Since then I've built 2 others and taught DS how to build himself one. We've made numerous upgrades and repairs and they've only ever cost the price of the parts.
Its less stressful when things go wrong too as you can see that it is likely to be fixable.

    Hello,

You didn't say how long you have had this computer? Might the components not have been under some kind of warranty? If the hard drive was only 2 years old, then it might have been under the manufacturer's warranty and as for the memory some manufacturers such as Crucial, Kingston or Corsair give really good warranties.

Like Culpepper, I learnt to do-it-myself, so that I would not be ripped off. I have done loads of upgrades and I get the parts from Ebay, computer fairs and sometimes car boots and jumble sales. I also do free fixes for friends and family and sometimes they recommend me to others. I charge hardly any money for my labour and they pay for the parts, I really just do it for the challenge.

If you built your own computer, why not go the next step and learn how to diagnose and repair any problems. Once you are knowlegeable then you won't feel so much that you are being ripped off.
  • up-date, rang shop today the guy says its the motherboard, as the one he used when I bought it off them 2-3 years ago as now no longer available, he says he has one in shop that they use as a temp I can buy that off them for £20 so I've said see if you can get it going with that and if so I'll have it, in total it will have cost me £15 in petrol and now £115 to get it fixed. what has annoyed me is that I wanted to up-grade the whole insides in march for my son's 21st which they said was'nt worth doing, they wanted me to buy a whole new system off them for around £400 which well yeh not going to do. and as for the name computerwoman, I thought why not I do teach people how to use windows and re-install at no cost, it's mostly family and friends, but it save's going to the shops. and yes this pc I'm on now I'm proud to say I built 2 years ago, and is still worth £1000 in the shops today, it's abit different when you look inside a shop bought pc, as one you've built yourself you where everything is and what could possibly go wrong, but I did post on here 5 said PSU fan 5 said CPU fan and it's neither, so I took it back to the shop, which judging by the sound of the guy today I wish I had'nt, so thanks for everyones help but I think if it does come back working then ok, if not then I've wasted my money and come march I'll start building another one bigger and better.

    Hi computerwoman

I hope it works out for you OK.

If you get the job sorted for £115 + £15 petrol money + stress...
then just take the hit and move on.:D ;)

If you get another year's use out of it then you will have done alright.

    Cheer up :j

My brother was going to put a new motherboard in my old computer, and the price for it was £40,so the shop guy is letting you have it cheap.
Its very much like owning a old car ,do you keep paying out for parts or get shot of it and buy a nice faster new one .
I think £130 is the limit i would pay to repair one.
computerwoman, get a guarantee of him for the work he has done.
I not got the brain to build a new computer,i just go on Dell and pick a good graphic card, ram, hard drive i want .
