I'm so annoyed, my first pc (shop bought) kept on crashing, critical error so on and so on, after pulling my hair out over this, I very stupidly took it back to the shop where I bought it from, they did a diagnostic check on everything, and came up with 1 stick of memory and the HD 120gb knackered, so I said how much will it cost to put right, £95 so I said well ok, just been on ebuyer, and 80gb HD and 1 stick of memory would onlt cost me £60, so I'm really fed up and sick to the teeth as I feel I've been ripped off.

I understand what you are saying but did they also fit the bits for you and reinstall your operating system ?0
-
Well 35 quid for diagnostics - fitting - re-installs etc and has it solved your problems ? How many hours work was that ?
Don't feel ripped off - feel pleased you are supporting your local High Street vendors and got a personal service ....

Yes they are re-installing windows, which they said they would'nt charge me for, and yes they have fitted both the HD and the memory, so I guess your right, but when I looked on ebuyer it would have only cost me £60 for the parts, I can fit them myself, as this pc I'm on now is the I built myself, so I should be grateful really, as I had no idea what was wrong, as memory does'nt normally fail, and the HD is 2 years old, but I asked them about up-grading the whole thing in march for my son's 21st birthday and they said it would be better to sell this one and buy a new tower all together, which I disagree with, as I've priced things up on ebuyer, and it'll cost around £250 for AMD 3200+ motherboard, 2gbs memory, 80gb HD, 6200 nvidia graphics card, sound card, CD-RW, DVD-RW, cooling fan, I've already got the tower, its a samuari, which I got from a closing down sale on an ebay shop, cost £40, which are priced at £90 still in the shops, so I don't think buying one from them at £400, is going to be an option, thanks anyway, Happy New Year All
PS the pc is still in the shop my son is on his way to collect it now.

sounds quite reasonable to me.

glad i know a wee bit abut PCs now!!!A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining and wants it back the minute it begins to rain.0 -
As long as you do not have a cheap PSU - which will start to blow things ..... 2 things going at once may have a single cause or may indicate another problem
For future reference - google memtest and utltimate boot cd. They have tools for testing errant pc's problems ..... HTHRich people save then spend.

thanks I'll bear this mind, and I think it is a cheap motherboard, I bought this pc from this shop, at the time they were advertising it as the ultimate gaming machine, ha, 2600 amd, 1 gb memory, 120gb hd, 5200 nvidia gc, cdwr, dvd-rom, sound card, have you ever been had, 19" crt monitor, basic keyboard + basic mouse, win xp home £800, yes they saw me coming
but now that I know alittle bit more, I can make that now for £250.

just to up-date you on whats happened, rang shop at 1.30pm they said they would install xp at no extra charge, and to pick the pc up at 4pm, when my son got to shop, the guy says sorry, it's not ready, so I rang shop just after then to find out what else was up, he said that while installing windows it restarted just before it had finished installing and that something else was wrong, but he did'nt know what yet as he'd never come across this sort of thing before, infact he'd never come across this before, so any suggestions would be gratefully received the guy in the shop said this wont cost any extra yeh right, and that I could collect it tomorrow, which is'nt possible as I have'nt got any transport now until tuesday, so I said I'd call back in on tuesday, the shop is 23 miles away from me, in another town.

Its always worth while considering buying decent memory sometimes, my memory, 2x1gb corsair has lifetime warrenty, so if it ever fails I just rma it back to the manufacturer.0

£35 seems quite cheap to me. That would probably get a plumber to your door but not work.0
-
I think you got a bargain there, I have seen shops charge £35 just to install windows.
Was it £60 + postage from ebuyer, since you might be getting an even better bargain, plus you don't have to put up with ebuyer sending one part of the order one day and waiting a week for ebuyer to send out the rest of it.0
