Anyone have a good tip for brightening yellowing uvpc window frames?

I think soda crystals might be the answer you are looking for. Have a look at www.soda-crystals.co.uk to see what they recommend.

There's an older thread in the Cleaning section of the MEGA Index (linked below) but I'm not sure that you haven't already tried the most well recommended options:-

  • I've had a bit of a search around and read through the sticky's but I can't seem to find the answer to my question, so I'm hoping you lovely people can help.

We're in the middle of decorating the nursery for our first baby who is due in April. Our newly painted woodwork is now looking bright white and fresh (ready for all those little fingermarks in the future) but the BT main socket is in this room and its old yellow plastic stands out like a sore thumb.

I've had a look around for a new box to replace this one but it seems difficult to find one, perhaps as you're not allowed to fiddle with this box as the master socket is "owned" by BT.

So as we're stuck with the box has anyone any tips on how I could make it look cleaner - I don't think painting will work and so I'm assuming cleaning it is my only option.

    Thanks in anticipation

  • Kitchen cleaner, applied using a cloth, not squirted, should work as well as anything on plastic sockets but I think you'll find the yellowing may be a reaction to sunlight rather than muck in which case there's little you can do about it.

    Hi MMS

What does the box look like? I'm surprised you can't get a replacement one... is it just the normal square box with a slot for a standard phone connection?

I just did a search on ebay for bt socket and I got both faceplates and master sockets come up. Is yours different? (Just asking to see if I could do a different search for you)

    I thought that too but kept finding advise like this on the net;

"IMPORTANT - *Replacing* your old-style BT master linebox with a new one of your own:

    DON'T EVER, AND THAT'S THAT.
The only people on the planet who are allowed to change your BT Master box are BT engineers. It's ILLEGAL to change it yourself. You face suspension/termination of BT service and/or a stiff fine if you do so. The Master line box is the "demarkation" point between Your Equipment and BT's Exchange Line, so everything on your side is your problem, everything on BT's side, including the Master box itself, is BT's problem. It needs to stay that way.

You mustn't just buy an NTE5 linebox from us and swap it with your old style master. You see, ONLY genuine BT master units have the embossed BT logo, and ONLY BT engineers possess the genuine articles. Once again for super clarity; ONLY BT-installed NTE5's have the little BT "Piper" in relief on the top left of the face. NOBODY ANYWHERE sells those legally, they're only EVER fitted by BT engineers."

Could you post a link for the ones you've found, as I could see if they have the BT logo on them?

    Thanks

We have just been given some old air conditioning units :D (not very OS I know, but we live in Spain so we need them) The plastic on them has yellowed and I was wondering if you have any ideas for whitening it again (vinegar? soda crystals?)

    Thanks

An alkali (spelling?) bath rather than an acid one will do the trick. I used Tricloroethalene to do a similar thing, I got some from a friend that works in a paint factory but I dont know if you can get it to buy.
I would imagine that you could get something similar from a paint suppliers.

I had a similar problem with some kitchen scales, there are certain cream colours that yellow over time. Sad to say I tried everything, bleach, washing powder, borax, you name it I tried it. It is still yellow so I gave up in the end. I think a cover up job is the only way as the previous poster said.

    Hi Twig,

We have an older thread on yellowing plastic that may help so I've merged your thread with it to keep all the suggestions together.
