Cancelling Pipex, they can't tell when. Is this accurate?

I need to cancel (not transfer) my internet access. Pipex tell me I need to give 30 days notice. Fine, thinks I....I need internet for the next 2 weeks so if I give notice today, all should be fine.

Not so says Pipex chap. If I give notice today, my internet access can go at any time UP TO 30 days. So in reality it could go tomorrow.

He advised me to only call in to cancel on the day I no longer need access in case it gets disconnected quickly. Is this accurate?

What's the point in giving 30 days notice if they can terminate whenever they feel like it?

It should be allied to your billing cycle. If you are billed on a certain date and pay in advance, then theoretically if you give notice the day it is paid, it "should" guarantee that you have internet until the day before the next cycle. HOWEVER you can bet your bottom dollar they will muck it up. Suggest you email their customer service for clarity, that way you will get it in writing.
