That doesn't seem to stop against the validation tool running once it's on my pc. I still don't see why my original product key is invalid, they gave me a new one once I read out the info off my cd (yes I have found the cd now! :T)

The new key has probably replaced the original product key on their database.

So how come it's rejecting the new one as invalid/incorrect too?

Not sure, never done this. In post #23 you said that the software would not download here: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/PKUInstructions.aspx
Did you check the box just above the Download button?

Checked the box, cleared the security box, but it comes up with this error even when the firewall is disabled

So you have managed to enter the new key given to you by microsoft but you still can't activate it yes no?
And that in turn is stopping you from validating right?

Nope unfortunately I am still unable to simply enter the new key given by Microsoft, which stops me from getting IE7 and upgrades to Media Player for example, because the program downloads, and during the install it checks validity... which fails.

The tech support guy killed the activation prompt by deleting a bunch of folders in the registry.

But something simple like changing the key using Microsoft's own tool, or using the link above seems near impossible :wall:

    Try this mate
    1. Run regedit and go to:
    HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents
on the right double click on "OOBEtimer" and change at least one digit of this value to deactivate windows.

    2. Choose run from start menu and type in this command:
    %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
to get the activation screen and go to the second option which is activate by phone.

    3. In the new screen choose the option to change product key, and type in the new product key (Corporate one only).

    4. Close that window, reboot your system and then try activating".

Obviously enter your new key in yeah
    HTH
