Windows XP Pro - activation needed but is being awkward

I think what's happened is this:-
You've been to the M$ website and downloaded the latest updates. You've either done this intentionally or, by mistake, your settings have got changed to 'automatically check for updates'.
In with the latest updates is the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) nag screen.
Now it's been downloaded and installed on your PC and is going to randomly nag you because, for whatever reason, it's not convinced that your XP is legit. Even though you know very well that it is.
I don't think that it's going to lock you out of Windows but will just keep annoying you till you come to some arrangement with M$.
There's an explanation here:- http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/microsoft/windows-genuine-advantage-wga-nag-screen.asp
There's lots of stuff on the web with various suggestions how (honest) users can bypass/uninstall this nag screen.
Google with keywords such as:- windows xp wga
WGA is an acknowledged trojan.
Now, the fact that Microsoft have deemed it fit to install a trojan is worthy of debate beyond the scope of this forum.

Hey Hey

I've spent ages on the phone to Microsoft's US support who have now killed the activation prompt - they also gave me a new product key after I told them my original product key (cheers bat999
) but this was also refused. So I was then connected to the tech support department who during a 1 and a half hour call managed to disable the activation prompt. So no more nagging...
So, I can use my PC again (oh thank you, thank you so much Microsoft) but he has advised me not to go to Windows Updates as my product key is still showing as invalid/ungenuine/fradulent/imposter/criminal/any other acronym. So I can't download updates anymore
They also advised me to visit: !!!!!!!.com/nvone and change my product key to the one I was given over the phone, but this wouldn't work for me because the tool on this site couldn't download files, is it working for anyone else? I didn't even get the prompt up so it's either my firewall which I've checked, or the Microsoft system which is down... :wall:
!!!!!!! = t i n y u r l (is that a swear word?!?!! :rotfl: )0 -
If you are having problems getting updates do a search for WindizUpdate0

The reason your laptop key failed on the other machine is because your laptop key is part of the OEM subset, which will not be accepted on a retail/upgrade install of windows XP.0

Crabman perhaps your original CD got copied and past to a car boot sale person - so yours is the only legit version and the other 1000 are copies ...
Sadly MS's reg database only used to pickup the top Ten duplicates numbers, then the top 100 etc .. now they seem to have the hang of it ...Rich people save then spend.

I find that hard to believe :rotfl:
The Microsoft tool is still misbehaving :wall: is anyone else able to get it to work and ask for your serial number without whining about not being connected to the internet? I've tried it again and I click Next, it validates something then proceeds to tell me it can't download files and I should ensure I'm connected to internet
May need to call Microsoft back tomorrow

OK does anyone know how I can change the product key in windows? The tool is still refusing to work - any method at all so I can plug in the new product key they generated for me.
Hope someone knows how

You can do it with this http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
Goto Options and change key

THanks - just tried this but came up with an error :wall:

The key was given by Microsoft!! How can that possibly be invalid? I even read it back to her twice
Any other ideas? There must be a way to change the product key!0 -
timberflake wrote:You also need to verify your copy of XP now before your allowed updates so using a dodgy copy is of no use really.
Couldnt you just use autopatcher:rotfl:0
