changing android primary email after stolen gmail account

I have had my primary android email account stolen, not expecting to get it back.

I have HTC Desire S.
I now have to change my primary email on my phone.

Question is, how do I do this without losing my contacts, which are synced with Google through my stolen gmail?
Do I need to do a factory reset? If so how can I backup contacts to restore afterwards?
Bear in mind I can't get onto Android market now to download any Alps

Also I assume I'll lose all apps linked to primary (hacked) gmail account.

Can you go to your gmail account on a computer and change the password? This will lock out your stolen email. If the gmail thief has stolen and changed your password you might be able to recover it by selecting forgotten password options in gmail. You can export your phone contacts to an SD card (its in the android contact options menu) to reimport later.

Google "android change google account". The first result is the answer.

Regarding the apps, I think you are right, but am not certain.

Thanks, I've filled the form in to try to get my account back but Im pretty sure I don't have enough details to get it back.

I've looked on Google but a couple of ways to do it without resetting phone don't seem to work on Gingerbread.

This is what I've tried, but on manage application list it doesn't have Google apps.
I think its because it runs gingerbread, was hoping there was a way to do it on gingerbread. Still searching.

There is an app called funambol sync http://www.appbrain.com/app/funambol-sync/com.funambol.androidsync

Also here http://androidforums.com/desire-support-troubleshooting/98113-how-backup-contacts-etc-htc-desire-computer.html Maybe worth trying. Also look for any Android backup apps.

This may be a red herring, but take a look.
