Modem problems ?

Son in laws father has been given computer that was running on broadband.
He has tried to install his dial up isp (Orange ex Wanadoo) but it cannot dial.
When he connects the phone cable to the computer the house phone will not
work.
Checked modem in control panel and it is enabled.
Anyone any ideas please ?

is this using a different socket to the house phone or the same via splitter?
We all evolve - get on with it
  • My advice (from my experience) would be not to use Orange broadband. I have always been with Wanadoo and until Orange took over I have nothing but trouble. The customer support line is terrible, no help at all, and the connection is very off and on. I am lucky when I can actually get connected. I am now in the process of looking for another internet supplier.

In addition to the above a further question - is it a modem modem or an ADSL modem - what is the modem's make & model + pc's make model and OS etc ...

From what the OP said they are trying to install dial up internet not broadband. If you are using dial up you will not be able to use your phone while the modem is connected. Have you set up your dial up account details in IE/Firefox?
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • Thanks for the help, it is dial up he is trying to use, but the phone goes dead when the telephone line is plugged into computer even when the computer is shut down. It is an internal modem in a Packard Bell computer. I feel it may be something to do with previous broadband setup that is still on the computer. He has re-entered the isp disc but no success

k - just wanted to check you was using the correct type of modem for dial-up . where did the cable come from > Is it original ? are you using an extension cable or splitter ?

Can you try from the master socket ?

  • The modem is internal and he has connected a telephone cable from the telephone wall socket to the computer. The wall socket appears to be ok as plugging the phone directly into it works ok. No splitter or extension cable being used.
  • did the cable you are using come with the PC?

  • I think he was using the cable from previous computer but bought a new one from PC World today.
