Help please- Edinburgh B&Bs

Hi all,

My boyfriend and I are planning a few days away to Edinburgh in mid-October. There seem to be a plethora of guest houses, B&Bs and other places to stay. We'll be getting the Caledonia Sleeper into Edinburgh Waverley station so we'll be walking/on public transport.

I was wondering whether anyone who has been recently or who knows Edinburgh could recommend somewhere reasonable but pleasant (and clean) to stay?

I was also wondering whether anyone could give me an indication of how long it takes to walk around. This may be viewed as a silly question but bear in mind I'm used to London which is, frankly, massive...

TIA

Caroline

Are there any specific areas you want to stay in? Have you tried Travelodge for a deal?

As for distances, it's very compact. You could walk the full length of Princes St or George St in about 15 minutes, the castle to Holyrood in about 20, Stockbridge to the Royal Mile in about 25.

Many thanks for your response! I'm not sure which area we'd like to stay in, where would you suggest would be best for the touristy things? I've never been to Edinburgh so have absolutely no idea...

The centre (bordered by Haymarket, Stockbridge, Holyrood and The Meadows, say) is the obvious place for having most things within walking distance, but the bus service pretty much anywhere is usually so frequent it doesn't really matter where you stay.

I'd be inclined to check Tripadvisor and try to balance budget, reviews and location. Sorry if that's vague, but Edinburgh's relatively small and even in the outskirts you'll not normally be more than half an hour or so by bus to the centre.

If you've any specific queries, someone here'll know the answer, I'm sure. I've only been here a few years and only really know the north and west, so am no great expert, although I still view Edinburgh through the eyes of a tourist.

Take the Edinburgh tour bus and you'll see lots of interesting places. Shut your eyes when the bus passed the dug up roads and ugly scaffolding in Princes Street. Enjoy your visit.

Hi, we stayed for 3 nights in June at the new Waterloo Place Travelodge which we got for £25 a night and it was lovely. Its a few minutes walk from Waverley station. The city itself is small, nothing like London. We bought the Edinburgh Passes which gave you entry to most of the big attractions and saves a lot of dosh.

I just checked and travelodge waterloo place has 4 days midweek in mid October for about £30 a night or less per room in their sale - but Id hurry to book if I were you, they wont hang about at that price.

On a budget - look out for BHS which does a 99p breakfast :) And we ate at Wetherspoons in George Street in the evening which was a smashing venue - old court building or something with chandeliers and very reasonably priced and decent food.

  • Worth checking out the Travelodge website to see if the prices are any good. We stayed in one of the central ones (St Mary's St, I think). When we looked at B&Bs they all charged per person, and seemed to cost about the same as some hotels!
Cinderfella's right, check out that you will be on a bus route. The bus service in Edinburgh is great.
    Have a fab time!
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

Mind you, the hills slow you down!
