I can't get the idea of getting a cat out of my head.......

........I find myself checking all the local rescue centres every week !

I really need to find out if I'm allergic first, and we need to get the house straight, so there's lots of things to be done before we go ahead, but I find myself a bit obsessed over the idea :o

I grew up in a house with no pets larger than a gerbil, so pretty daunted by it all. DH has lived with a cat in the past, so has been filling me in on all the [STRIKE]mad [/STRIKE]adorable things that they can get up to.

Who'd have thought that at the grand old age of 39 & 2/3, I'd be so excited about getting a pet with the hubby !

Cats are soooo wonderful, you will not regret it :j I am writing this with one (Friday) sat on my lap - erm - "helping"; Another, Harry, has actually just pushed her off as I was writing this to take her place, and is even less help (much bigger and heavier :D) and Robbie keeping out of all the kerfuffle in another room :rotfl:.

On top of that, I am getting two Bengal kittens in August! Here is a video I took of them at the breeder's at the weekend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whC1Pt_DAwY

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have lots of animals, but my cats are those that sleep with us and spend as much of the day as they can with me. I have siamese and they even want to bath with me (I've just been reading a book in the bath with a cat on my belly). They are demanding, noisy, troublesome and I can't imagine our home with out them. :)

Go on, do it - you won't regret it :D

If you're worried about being allergic you could offer to short term foster for a rescue, I'd imagine they'd be in need of replacement fosterers whilst regular fosterers are on holiday during the summer months. You never know if you're not allergic you might just fall in love and keep him or her!

I'd love a couple of Siamese too ! Always thought that they were so pretty. I just can't wait until the house is up to standard enough so that we can start to plan for the additions to the family :)

You wont regret it.I currently have a Daisy Fuzzlebug asleep on my lap,if you are going to get a purrball, may I suggest that you look at the white & black cats as they, next to all black & all white cats, are often overlooked.Daisy herself is a English Shorthair, which is a breed noted for it's affection, laid back attitude & good with kids.

Yes, especially with active and vocal Bengals! My other cats (3 current, and 3 who have gone to the Rainbow Bridge), are all rescue moggies - it is so rewarding to give these cats a forever home :)

    I didn't know that you could do this ! That's a great idea :T

A friend of mine has suggested that I could kitten-sit for her if she should need to go away. That way I could test myself out on non-pedigrees. I have also handled Devon Rexes & Siamese without feeling like I'm allergic to them. So even if my friend's cat doesn't work out, there's still hope if I can find someone with one of these two types to have a play with

I had a severe allergy to cats - so bad if I spent time with one I could be in bed for days. But we started to get a really sweet visitor who spent more and more time with us and I was popping antihistamine like there was no tomorrow. And over time I took less and less antihistamine and now I don't have to take any at all.

So even if you do have a reaction, it could be that with time and antihistamine (how many times can I say antihistamine?) it will fade.

very good to know. I'm hoping that the allergy thing is something that I've grown out of. The really bad reaction I had was 20 years ago now, and I seem to be generally less sensitive in most things. Well, except hayfever - this year has been ridiculous. I suppose the upside is that I'll be on antihistamines (I said it too!), so all bases covered!
