My answering machine, which is built into a Panasonic DECT phone has the ability to record a conversation, as did the phone I had before it. It gives the periodic beeps to let both parties know it is being recorded and will record up to the capacity of the device (40 minutes with mine).

Actually thats incorrect, the other party does not need to know that the call is being recorded unless you plan to release it to a third party. If its for personal use then there is no requirement.

Well actualy Jamesb, if Im incorrect how comes the law says different here : http://www.seg.co.uk/telecomm/record.htm

My Solicitor has advised me on this and assures me it is not illegal for me to record my own private conversations.

My recorder came in terribly handy earlier on this year after I had recorded (not in the tape recorder sense) a complaint against a police force. The first time that I made contact, I informed the officer that I was recording the conversation. His tone changed dramatically from a friendly, to an extremely proffessional one.
It also came in handy at the hearing before the appointed inspector. I find that people are more truthful when there is a permanent record of their comments. (I am not implying here that peeps in authority would make misleading, ambiguous or indeed false statements, heaven forbid)

hardly an authoritative statement of the law when the first paragraph says....

"The information is presented in good faith but no responsibility is accepted for the accuracy of this information. You should not rely on it legally. If in doubt, consult a solicitor. This information applies the UK only. The information here is not presented on behalf of any company or official body."
• In the interests of science I tried out one of these

I didn't pay anything like the price asked here since I got it from Hong Kong. I worked quite well but if you make an outgoing call you have to press the button.

Also you have to supply your own SD card.

The screen is tiny and it helps if you understand Chinese (I don't) but when I stopped fiddling with it and just turned it on it managed a lot better.
It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.

aah! good old QVC!

I was certain they sold a Call recorder!

and they do!!!

Truecall Unit it's a cross between a call recorder and call screening system. but it records conversations to SD card so you can transfer them to a PC easily...

This is what you want. Not cheap but very good.

Have had one for a number of years. Fully automatic.
