    It seems to stay really fresh and moist for ages (well three days, which is the longest a loaf lasts in this house),it's easy and, at the moment, very cheap if you have a large Mr. M supermarket near you, as the KTC brand chick peas are only 20p a tin. Also, I would definitely recommend the Lidl strong white flour, very good indeed.

    Sounds like a nice loaf.Do you add the chick peas whole or mashed up?

    yeah its asda, must admit I use the cheap flour for all my baking and never have any complaints

    I was just going to set up an excel spreadhseet to compare prices/weights etc today for exactly this question. What a handy thread. I was reckoning a loaf costing around 30-50p, but being about half the size of shop bought ones, and lasting a day or two at a time (before its eaten, not gone bad). So I'd use about £2 a week on shop loaves, and from 80p to £3.50 a week on home made. Might not save all the time, but its convenient, tasty, smells great and I reckon healthier. Now I just need practise cutting slices that don't start about 1cm, and finish around 3 lol.
    Anyone have a BM recipe (or even oven I guess) for Corn Bread (i.e. made from cornmeal/flour instead of wheat flour). Its very popular in Holland (where my wife comes from) and I love it whenever we visit, but I just can't seem to find it here.

    I was amazed yesterday when 1. my loaf actually baked properly (my third attempt; first time I used fluid oz instead of weighing the liquid, so it never mixed or cooked; second time I misread the recipe and used tblspoon instead of tsp for the salt and it just didn't rise); and 2. the blade just slid out of the bread and stayed in the bottom of the pan.

  • really, really want to make a loaf now, after seeing these lovely, inticing recipes so annoyed that mine wont work, ive changed the fuse, its a real puzzle.:mad:

    I had this problem, solved by buying & using an electric knife [Morrison's £5], just slices it straight instead of my door stops

    My BM has three sizes. The largest one makes an 800g loaf. The bread tends to be taller than shop bought so you get a longer slice (and you may need a long slot toaster!).

    If you add butter to the recipe, the loaves keep for a couple days and it's still nice toasted on the third day (if there's any left).

    As for cornbread, I've found one in my favourite book "The Bread Machine Cookbook" by Jennie Shapter but it's Bubble Cornbread and seems to be an American recipe (it involves cornmeal, drained sweetcorn and chillis). I don't think it's what you're after.
