Installing ADSL router - problems

I'm trying to install this router http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6750787.htm to a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. I get so far with the installation but it's saying it's not connected to the modem. Of the three options it gives me the only one I'm not sure about is the network card. How do I know if there is one in this PC?

You will need to install the wireless USB dongle on your PC first... Then (if its activated) it will connect wirelessly to the router. Netgear lets you install this way but some require that you use a hard line to install. Thats where your network card will come in. You should have got a network cable with the modem. It will have a plug similar to a BT phone plug on either end and will go between PC and router.

Start > control panel > system > hardware > device manager

If you have one installed it will be listed there.

If this is your laptop then yes you have wireless adapter see below

What programme is giving you the 3 options ? What are you installing ? Is the router powered up etc ? Do you have a wired pc connected to it or another wireless laptop ?

Just checked and it CAN be setup over wireless (according to official website). Just install the USB wireless on your desktop and then try again..

    Quick replies, thanks :)

Erm, there isn't a control panel?!

I installed the dongle and it says it's connected with excellent signal strength.

Thank you GreenNotM, I did look but obviously not hard enough as didn't see it listed.

Would treat dongle as an extra - use the laptop's wireless card.

What are you using to connect to the internet at the moment Sammz ??

    click this link

    http://192.168.1.1/

It should bring up the config page for your browser and let you configure it from there instead of installing the software..

Sorry, rereading - I do have a cable between PC and router. It's the Wireless ADSL Router CD Quick Installation that's saying there is a problem.

Would ignore the software and go straight to the address scooter gives it is the router address on ur LAN - change admin password and pop it on a post-it under the router - if some body finds it - they are already in ur house - hide ur other passwords tho:rotfl:

You need to be setting up the wpa/wep keys etc - again write/save to a txt doc

So this 9300 is on the internet thru the cable and you want to wireless it ? or are you using your old router & pc to connect ?
