It's not "Nit Picking" WHEN THE ADVISE COULD RESULT IN A FATAL ACCIDENT ?

OK i dont like the way you make out what i advised is dangerous, its the correct way of doing things if you choose that route.

The OP wanted ADVICE to see if they felt compotent enough to carry out the work, and now its for them to decide, its a simple job but when people start quoting this reg and that reg its just trying to scare the OP off doing and people trying to make a statment "Look at me iam so clever i know everything about everything"

Seeing as the thread has gone a little 'off topic', for the benefit of the OP i'll clarify a couple of points.

This work does not require notification under Part P regs as it is an additional point to an existing circuit which is not in a special location.

The position of the switch does not need to comply with Part M unless all of the electrical installation meets these regulations (only likely if the house was built 2000 onwards).

TBH if I was the OP and I had just read the above I would have completely given up on this thread and gone elsewhere for the advice.:(

lol. I have only just come back on to see if there were any further responses and it appears I have kicked up a bit of a ruckus!

I have had a look at the wiring and there are two cables running into the switch so two sets of live, neutral and earth wires. Doesn't look overly complicated if I go for the blanking plate option. I would just get an electrician in but it is just getting a nightmare trying to co-ordinate so many different workmen and getting them to agree on when each stage of the job will be done! If I add anyone else to the mix I'll be at it til Christmas!

The house was built in the 70's so I would assume that Part M does not apply. There seems to be some disagreement on here about Part P but I had understood it to mean that additional lights and sockets could be added without being notifiable unless in a 'wet area'?

It is non notifiable if "other safety provisions are satisfactory".
This work qualifies as "minor work" as it is an addition to an existing circuit and therefore should be tested and inspected in accordance with the provisions of regulations.
As you are probably unlikely to have the professional knowledge, qualifications or equipment to carry this out, then I would say that "other safety provisions" are not satisfactory.

Approved Document M applies to all rewiring.
