Feel stuck living here!

Me and OH currently rent a property near to the city centre - we are no longer tied into a contract so in theory could upsticks when we choose, the reality is we can't....
We both are miserable living here - the property itself is fine but the area is just so dull, everything around here has closed down and if you want to go shopping you actually have to go to the neighboring city (20mins or so away). The area has a limited nightlife, zero restaurants (unless you fancy a kebab), no cinema in town and to be honest its just generally not the nicest place to live.
We would both love to move to the neighbouring city as it has everything we want there...
Rents in the neighbouring city are a lot higher, at least £200pm more for a similar property which I know is understandable, and on paper we could afford the rent increase but considering we both work in our current city the commuting time and cost has to be taken into consideration and after calculating the journey in terms of petrol would add another £200 a month onto cost of moving areas, whereas at present our commuting cost is almost zero as we both live close to work.
We just couldn't afford an extra £400pm but we just don't want to be stuck living here because its getting us down so much, its not even like we can move area's in our current city because we are already living in the nicest bit of it.....

As someone who lives in the country with a fifty minute commute to work the idea of a £0 commute and living in a city centre sounds pretty appealling. Our nearest shops are about 20 minutes away and although for instance the butchers is very good it's mostly shut whenever I'm not working.
Realistically I don't suppose you have £400 spare a month. Is taking a train to the neighbouring city at the weekends an option?0 -
I am sorry you feel like this but 20 minutes or so -especially when you are able to drive - is nothing! I live in the suburbs of a biggish city and it's 10 minutes on public transport to get to the city centre, 20 minutes to get to the seaside and 30 minutes to get to the countryside in a car. That's life. You can't have everything on your doorstep and if you do, there is usually a price to pay as you have found out.
I'm sorry I don't sound very sympathetic but if the area you live in is just dull and not unsafe and your rent is affordable, your property fine then you haven't got much to complain about. I think there must be another reason you feel like this. Perhaps you need to be more creative and/or more organised regarding going out.LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

Think of all the places you can go and things you can do with that £400 per month. You could be living in the other city but have far less money to go out so you'd be no better off. 20 minutes isn't far to go for a night out, after all.0

Is it possible to look for jobs in your chosen city and move later? When you have no ties you can make the most of city living. I lived in Manchester in my 20's and it was an amazing place to be. I would definitely relocate if at all possible. Life is too short to waste it in a place you don't want to be.Debt free as of July 2010 :j

I know it doesn't sound like anything at all, in theory its not - the thing is taxi's are £40 between the two city's that time of night. The buses are non existent and the trains stop running by 10.30 which is what makes it so frustrating.
We go out to the city most weekends for shopping etc and catch the train but its just so annoying knowing we can't go out and make an evening of it because otherwise we'll miss the last train home...several years ago the trains used to run until 3am but that just doesnt happen anymore.
OH has applied for jobs in the other city but so far havent had any luck, but Im fairly happy in my current job and to be honest wouldnt really want to leave it...0 -
Well take the car if taxis are too expensive and take turns as to who is driving and who is drinking.LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

I don't think 20mins is long...it takes me that or longer to get to tescos for the shopping...never crossed my mind before that it was 'far'???? I'd be saving the £400 a month for a cracker of a holiday rather than paying that in rent/costs! xYou may walk and you may run

And every time the storm and the soul wars come
You just keep on walking0
