I think our cleaners charge £15 an hour. They do a decent job, and they are from a locally owned small business. I didn't like the idea of agencies as I have heard a lot of them pay their staff poorly and treat them badly. Besides, it's worth every penny and then some!

Diamond - I was at home the first time they came in case they needed to ask anything, but then gave them a key and let them get on with it for next time. They seem to prefer working when we're out so we don't get in their way so I imagine most of their customers are out when they clean.

I've used larger companies before and none have been very good. The first couple of cleans are good then it goes downhill. Had a lovely cleaner in my last house who was recommended by a friend - she was a lady just working by herself but when we moved house it was too far away for her to keep coming round.

In our new town we had no recommendations. I phoned a couple of ads in Yellow Pages and found our cleaner who's a really nice guy. He has a company but it's just him at the moment. His was the cheapest quote (£35 to clean a 4-bed house!) and we liked him so gave him a go. We've had him round to clean the house once a fortnight for a year now. He has insurance and also showed us references.
  • Im a self employed cleaner and most of my clients are out while I clean, occasionally they are in but they let me get on with it and do their own thing... I started off with 2 jobs and now have 15+ all due to recommendations. I charge around £9 an hour, and use all my own equip and products and pay ni and tax.... Going self employed was the best thing ive done work wise and im now at a stage where i can physically not fit any more jobs in. I have a son and all my jobs know this and if a problem arises due to illness or anything they are flexible on days.

Many of my clients have used bigger companies and have said they would not do so again (usual not keeping to times, cutting corners and poor standards) so if i was personally looking for a cleaner i would get a recommendation.. I am proud of my standard of work and i would not be able to employ and trust someone else to work for me to clean at my standards in other peoples houses.

if you cant get recomendation then get references

My son and his girlfriend have just got a cleaner, she is a personal friend who wants to start a cleaning round. They pay her £6 an hour.

Your story sounds like mine:) And I live near York, too. Now, I'm getting my first employee to help me with my job.
