Don't be so silly. Of course you don't.

They are working for themselves and need to sort that out for themselves.[/QUOTE

If they invoice you And are really self employed yes. If not they may well say that they thought you were employing them. Do you know they are self employed or are you assuming it?

Are they providing their own materials and do they have some control of their own hours?

We had a big case in our village a couple of years ago. All the people a woman was working for were interviewed. She claimed they were employers and she thought the money was after tax and NI etc. She was being investigated for tax and some benefits. All got very messy and lots of mud slinging.

No you don't. You are hiring them to do a job on a self employed basis surely? I don't pay NI for my window cleaners for example.

Not necessarily on a self employed basis. You can't assume it and should always check and get it in writing. Do they invoice you? Provide own materials? Have some choice over hours worked etc etc

    no you dont

If you are employing them you are their employer and yes you do (have to get NI number and register as an employer etc)

If they are contracted, self employed or invoice then no you don't.

Always pays to check that you both have the same understanding and get it it writing.

I advertised my services on Gumtree and was contacted by a lot of people requiring a cleaner / ironer. I charge £12 an hour, i pay my own tax and national insurance, I have a full criminal records bureau check and insurance for which I pay £19 per month. My insurance covers me for items currently being worked on, some don't.

I have worked for an agency who provided their own cleaning products and hoover but paid the minimum wage to staff. I found that my colleagues were not as happy to do 3 hours work for £17.79 as they were to do 3 hours work for £30!

That's a really important part I forgot. A self employed person should also have full insurance liability and should be able to show you the certificate.

Sounds like you have it all sorted out.

  • Pay peanuts and get monkeys. Now the monkeys are foreign immigrants who either have lower standards or resent the fact that you have what they want but cannot obtain.

If you fire them you only get the same standard of rubbish. Either you do without or you pay more. Simple.

I don't actually know anyone who has used a cleaning service before so I have no one to ask for recommendations.

I'm mostly just needing someone because I'm so shattered after working that I just can't keep on top of housework, I'm not sure if it's a cleaner I need or some sort of PA. Someone who could stick a washing on would also be handy but I think I'm just dreaming with that one.

Are there any organisations that help disabled people sort out this sort of service?

I am self employed as a cleaner. I also do washing, ironng and whatever including taking recycling to the tip lol. Fortunately i only work for a few people I know but I did advertise a few years ago.
I was thinking of starting an agency but I was always worried about the standard of people you can employ.
(I worked for one for 3 months before i started)
Fortunately my people realise that cos i have kids I don't always turn up on the dot.
But they luv the way I do the socks n pants !
    lol

For the ones that are cleaners or have been. Are the people generally home when you are in there cleaning? And do they stare at everything that you are doing?

I have thought about doing cleaning but like to just get on with work alone.

I would love to start a cleaning company, but it would have to be with a partner who liked doing the talking to people and meeting them and stuff, that's just not me. I would do more the marketing, accounts and everything and cleaning as well. Dreams are good things ha.
