Days out around East Yorkshire

After spending the last few Years going to Cornwall , we have decided to try the East Yorkshire coast for a nice change.
We are stopping for a week a few miles outside of Hornsea and have basic plans for visiting Hornsea , Beverley , Whitby and Scarborough/Brid.
Would anybody recommend any decent places of interest or hidden gems that might be worth visiting in the area ?
Have been to Whitby a couple of times and York lots of times but thats about my knowledge of the east coast.
We would be taking our 2 children ( little girl is 3 and son is 11) so any ideas or downloadable vouchers that any kind person knows of would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :money:

  • Goathland where they used to film Heartbeat is just inland from Whitby. If you follow the old railway track out of the village (not the new line! best to ask the car park attendent) it'll take you to Beck Hole which is a little village with a pub http://www.beckhole.info/bhi.htm which is worth a visit for its rustic charm (dog and child friendly)

You can sometimes pick up vouchers for flamingo land near malton/pickering also Eden camp is worth a visit in that area. Thornton le dale is nice too to take a picnic to also Dalby Forset.

There is also The Deep in Hull

There is a large car boot at Strawberry fields in Bridlington - you will pass it as you come from Hornsea on a Thursday and i think tuesdays now for the summer. And a car boot on the way to flamborough from bridlington on sundays - not far from Sewerby Hall which is a nice visit.

If your in Brid on 18 august (i think) this is Brid bash - a concert at the Spa put on by Viking Fm

Theres a train line that goes from pickering to goathland North York Moors railway think its a steam train

and they are also doing loads of stuff harry potter themed at hornsea freeport:

And dont forget peasholme park at scarborough there is also a sea life centre near there too and Morrisons often have vouchers for that one.

Oh and Robin Hoods Bay is nice on the way to Whitby.

We love Scarborough. There are always loads of discount tickets for Sealife when you get there. We've just got back and got given flyers in pizza hut, travelodge and on all our parking tickets. Peasholm park is also good with the boating lake and steam train. Filey is nice and has a lovely giant splash pool on the front - our little ones loved it. We had a brilliant day at flamingoland - really reccommend it. However, it seems hard to get a discount - your best bet is probably ebay but they can sell for quite a lot. Whitby is great - speed boat rides, lovely beach, walk up to the abbey etc.. Magpies cafe is gorgeous although for a cheaper option we liked fish and chips at Rennards at Scarborough.

Sewerby House & gardens is worth a visit at Bridlington- a lovely stately home with an animal park adjoined, has some lovely gardens and places to play and sit and have a picnic. You can get the mini train down to the beach too.
Also near Skipsea is Skirlington market which is open Sundays, has a carboot and market.

I'd definitely recommend the Sea Life Centre over the Deep and I would definitely recommend Scarborough over [STRIKE]Dull[/STRIKE] Hull.

I have never got round to visiting the Rock Factory but It has been recommended to me previously: http://www.clients.r-evolution.co.uk/john-bull/see-yourself

Todays Groupon may be of interest fro your son? It is an offer for paintballing and archery type things in scarborough.

Little hoppers will suit your daughter on a rainy day and it has scarborough karting and a laser quest very close by for your son.

The sealife centre have 2 for one vouchers everywhere. Pick one these or book online and get discounted tickets for the adjacent crazy golf too.

Flamingo land do good discounts for booking online. Failing that the 'whats on' guide from the tourist information centre and most news agents has a buy two get on free voucher inside.

Betton farm is a free to visit petting zoo and young childrens play area that is well worth a visit to pass an hour or so between more ostly attractions. Ignore the costson the website. It has recently been taken over and is now free.

Combine your grocery shopping with the kids letting off steam. Sainsburies in Scarborough has a good play park adjacent to it and of course free parking if you use the supermarket car park.

Check out all the free activities days offered by the local museums and galleries here.

Dalby forest is worth a visit. The visitor centre there run activities sometimes too.

This website will tell you about most things happening in the area.

Have you ever tried geocaching? it is good to break up journeys and to find new places.

Treasure hunts in general can engage children your sons age. Have a look at these.

It would be a crime to visit this area and not go to York. the National railway museum is good and free entry, the jorvik centre has won a few awards and of course the dungeons are also a big hit but entirely not suitable for your daughter!

i could go on forever. If there is anything in particular you would like an opinion on please do get in touch :)

On a different note - if you are going to Hornsea and fancy a cuppa the kids will love the little cafe that sells fancy chocolates. Sorry can't remember its name but its very distinctive. You get a free posh chocolate with each drink. It was amazing - best hot choc we've ever had and rivals Thorntons for the quality of the chocolates.
