Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

Thanks for the replies, very interesting indeed, can you explain please what is on our test certificate, just a part of it, thanks
Natural idle test
CO % vol Max limit, 0.300 actual value 0.000 pass
Fast idle test CO % vol max limit 0.200 actual value 0.000 pass
We thought that meant we had no co emissions, ?
Or have we read it wrong? Thanks a lot, oap0 -
It doesn't matter what the piece of paper from your garage says - what counts is what the Government says your car produces !!!
Tony is always right !0 -
Oh, well thats that then, it was worth a try!!! regards oap0

I believe the advice is to make sure your engine is thoroughly warm before running this test, which of course is tricky if you leave the car and pick it up later, because it may have cooled down before they do the test. But garages are aware of this problem.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
That's impossible and I would suggest you get the emissions checked again. That model is a gas guzzler and your comment about << does very well on petrol>> is relative. Far from reducing road tax I would if I could pass a law that all such vehicles pay a quadruple road fund license!! And what has your age got to do with it, or is it just your attempt to beg the question about environmental pollution.
<<We are aged 71 and 76, we own a ten year old Mercedes Benz Elegance, 1998 cc. We have had to pay this year £175 car tax. We do about three thousand miles a year or less. Our emissions are nil, yes nil on CO, and our mot reading is well below the requirements.
We now find out that friends of ours with bigger but newer cars are paying a lot less, and do not think this is at all fair, we have had our car six years and it has to see us out, it costs us nothing in repairs,is in fabulous condition, is still on the same exhaust system from new, (one owner before us) and does very well on petrol.>>Snootchie Bootchies!0 -
I would be interested to kow what you mean by "very well" on petrol.
Basically you have a gas guzzler that is not environmentally friendly and people like you are being penalised by the tax system.
You have two choices.
1) Keep it because you like it and just grit your teeth about the tax.
2) Change it for a model that's cheaper on insurance, tax and petrol. I accept that you may not want to do this but I don't accept it's not possible or you can't afford it.
Last year we bought my parents (in law) a corsa 1.2.
It's very cheap to run and even though they are both mobility impaired (78 and 79) there is plenty of room for them.
One with low mileage cost £2500 and the tax is very low.0 -
Happy New Year to you.....
Well our lovely car has been treasured and cared for and the engine is immaculate. It has only done just under 56000 miles even though it is ten years old. It does 30 to the gallon, it does not get driven hard. The Insurance with Age Concern is £209 per annum.
Although in previous years (we bought it second hand when it was four years old) we have done around 5000 miles a year, we now use the free bus, and only did under 2000 miles last year. So no point changing it now.
We have it serviced at the correct time, change the oil more often than necessary, and of course the tyres, after that it has cost us nothing in repairs or parts, and is still on its original silencer. When we bought it we were looking at a Honda for £13000, new, we bought the Merc second hand for the same price, it had cost £27000 new. So a bargain.
So we shall keep it, it purrs along, is very comfortable, and solid and dependable. Yep, we shall have to put up with the government thinking we run an old banger, which has done thousands of miles and puts out stinking emissions, which of course is rubbish!!
Cheers , oap0
