I dont think I'll do another 24 month contract. Its a long time to be stuck with the same phone, and if you lose it or it gets broken you have a long time to pay for. They'll get the money out of you one way or another.

    Thanks for the replies.

I just can't seem to bring myself to sign up to a 24 month contract. It's not even the phones, I've always just saved up and swapped phones if I wanted a different phone. I just think things change so much that 24 months is too long for me personally to tie myself in for.

I dont like contracts that much.Just too much commitment if you hit hard times like lose a job etc & still have to pay that £35/£40 per month. With payg, you can just stop without penalty if need be.

Ask your current network when your contract ends for the best deal they will do for the services you require but no handset or even a basic Nokia.

Note:- I am not saying sim-only because the previous time I renewed with Orange, they had more leeway with a contract rather than a sim-only and I got a better deal in 2009 with a Nokia 2330 plus minutes/texts than an equivalent sim-only. (I used my own handset and kept the 2330 as a spare).

I like the flexibility given by 12 month sim only contracts, I currently pay £7 (after cashback) for 300 minutes, 3000 texts and 1gb of internet and I then stick £15 a month in a tin and when the time comes when I want a new phone, I simply buy it.

I've seen a huge amount of threads here with people saying 'you're stupid to sign up to a 24 month contract'.

    My question is, why?

Why are you personally reluctant to sign up to a 24 month contract? Or are you not and you don't see what the fuss is about?

Because phone companies change deals all the time and you could end up in the situation I am in where I took out an Orange 24 month contract and 11 months later, 3 brought out a far better deal and not only that, Orange network has gone to crap but as I can make calls, they're upholding their side of the contract.

And because airtime continues to get cheaper each year. What drives up the price of contracts (and their duration) is the complexity and cost of new handsets, and the belief by so many that they must have the latest all-singing all-dancing handset upgrade every 12 months or so.

I am in the last 30 days of my contract. I have caled and they won't offer me anything not on the website, which is more expensive than everyone else.

O2, don't do retentions any more.

Called this morning to see if they'd give me a small discount on 30 day sim only, in line with everyone else. Nope, not unless I want to take a 12 month one. Which I don't because I want to see what's happening with the iPhone 5. Said I can go to 12 month sim only, then upgrade when the iPhone 5 comes out. Didn't seem bothered when I said I didn't want to do that as when it comes out they'll be more expensive both per month, and on the handset price.

So I'll go with a tesco sim only, I know they use the o2 network so signal will be good, then I can go with them for a 12 month contract if I do want the iPhone 5.
