Cleaning sheepskin

Never washed a sheepskin coat, but regularly washed my horses sheepskin numnah (the thing that goes under the saddle).
Used a mild soap (fairy like) and hung on the line to dry. ten minutes in the dryer to fluff it up so it didn't hurt his poor little back and it was as good as new.
I am not saying this would work for a coat though. What about your local laundrette (if you can find one) - ours has a dry cleaning machine which works out a fraction of teh cost of getting it done professionallyLight travels faster than sound - that's why you can see someone who looks bright until they open their mouth.0 -
Hiya, Try... I think it is called woolite or dreft and give it a soak in the bath. I would put the jacket into the washing machine to spin some of the water out. Then hang out on the line on a sunny day.If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
Spring begins on 21st March.0 -
Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll see if I can find a launderette with a dry-cleaning machine first, that would certainly be lots cheaper than a cleaners and lots less work!0

Well, no launderette with dry cleaning machine anywhere near, I looked at spray cleaners, rubbers etc., and decided to just chuck it in the machine and see what happens.
The worst that could happen would be a ruined jacket which I've had for more years than I care to remember (think C&A!), and after all sheep get wet in the rain.
Put it in on a cold/delicate wash with a dollop of Dove Pro-Age shampoo.
Result - brilliant! Lovely clean, sweet-smelling jacket. Just have to get it fully dry now.
So, if you see a bargain in a charity shop or car boot and think it'll cost you a fortune to have cleaned, if it's cheap enough just take a chance!0 -
i washed my sheepskin rug in the machine the other day after LO was sick on it.. line dried it and it came out ok.. i just used wool cycle and regular washing powder0

I put mine in the bath with tepid water and liquid detergent especially for woollens. Let it soak and then rub gently with fingertips. Rinse well and wash again as before, rinsing until all the soap has gone. Allow most of the water to drain out then turn jacket outside in, fold and put in washing machine to spin. Hang to dry and use a brush to bring the pile back up. Brand new !0

i wash my sheepskin rug in bio powder on 30 degree quick wash - but with highest spin speed then tumble dry. comes out as perfect as the day i bought it! oh and that advice was originally from my OH (no washing expert) who used sheepskins under the saddles when he kept horses.0

Hi
I've searched for this but just came up with lots of threads about UGG boots.
I have a lovely pair of sheepskin gloves which have got some marks on, not sure where from as I've been careful with them so I don't really know what the stains are.
I've googled it and come up with a few suggestions for specialist cleaning products and hand washing but I just wondered if anyone had a tried & tested method.
I'd rather keep them as they are and put up with the stains than ruin them.
Thanks in advance.0 -

Is there anything in this existing thread? I'll merge this later to keep ideas together.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0
