seems to be hit and miss whether you get one, as I have lots of defaults and a few CCJs now a few years old but still I cant get one, not that i do want one now as I get by with a debit card. Will wait till Im all clear and apply in the hope to start building my what will be then clean file into going mainstream for just one card.

i have such lousy credit, i have just a savings account with what was alliance and leicester. everything gets paid into it and pay cash for everything.
and when i said to them that i would prefer to pay on statement, she was most huffy and said well, you do realise that paying by direct debt helps your application?? also not having my own landline seems to be a definate no-no. when i said that i wasnt happy being more or less forced into doing things i wasnt happy with, i was told to go away and think about and call them back. when i didnt call them back, thats when they started phoning me on a daily basis.
will do without. unless anyone knows of a card for folk with rubbish credit that is a bit more straight forward.0 -
Like you quote in your first sentence, you have a lousy credit record. Lenders to be honest are not going to fall over themselves to give you credit.
The only other provider is Capital One, but they will probably turn you down.
If you are desperate for a credit card, maybe its you who is going to have to be more co-operative.0 -
Vanquis have just rang me and after a hard sell of their protection programme and me saying no about 6 times I have been approved for a card.
I had to also authorise a direct debit for the minimum amount to be paid each month. I would rather not have this and pay the full amount manually, online each month. Will I be able to change this?
Thanks0 -
i can do without to be honest, just was thinking about rebuilding my credit, but at 64 years old, does that really matter??0

You can cancel the payment protection as soon as you receive your card, that is what I did anyway. I have the DD payment set up but I have not used it yet, I always pay it off using my debit card on line.:pB&SC No. 298

I used to do this every time I applied for a loan, Couldnt be doing with the hard sell, and the what will happen to you family if you carnt work guilt trip BS, so I would agree then just ring and cancel it after money as in my bank in the 14 day cooling off period.
Also if they want DD but you dont want to do it, just agree untill they send you the card then cancel the DD and just pay on statment, simples.0 -

I wouldn't do this right away, as they could easily cancel the account, leaving you no better off but with a recent search on your credit file.Feb 2024:
CC1 6537.66
CC2 7804.45
CC3 4221.17
CC4 2053.68
CC5 989.30
Loan 1 3686.44
Loan 2 5275.22
Total £30,567.920 -
            Ok thanks for that everyone.
Will it be ok then to leave the DD in place and pay off the balance in full manually online? I'm just concerned that the DD will go out when I have already paid the balance in full therefore incurring a charge for putting the card in credit.0 -
