Just played with names on the quote and changed son to daughter and it comes in with a price of £899.92. Phoned Admiral to ask why they discriminate between male & female as I beleive this is against UK law.

Up shot is the adviser did tell me that male & female driving insurance is to be 're-aligend' in December this year with a male's insurance dropping and the females going up. So looks like I'll wait until December 2012 for this to happen to save a good sum of money I hope.

I wouldnt get your hopes up. They are far more likely to raise the price females pay or simply not quote at all.

You need to understand that at his age, insurers simply dont want the business, and price it accordingly.

Insurers also rate on postcode, occupation, experience etc. It is simply not a like for like comparison for someone to say tesco quoted x and you expect to pay the same.

The OP may live in the deepest part of the countryside whereas you may live in an area where insurers have experienced many claims from young male drivers and don't really want the business hence the price.

Go along and see a good local broker that knows the market for young drivers and see what they suggest.

£2,988 for 3 cars with your son as main driver on one and starting to earn his own bonus doesn't seem too bad actually.
  • My OH isnt young (late 20s) but had to get his licence. He was treated as if he was a new young driver and charged accordingly. Even though he already drove in USA. Ecar was the cheapest insurance for him

  • my colleague who just passed his test and was struggling for insurance but he got a half decent quote for £2500 fully comp with swiftcover for a VW Polo 1.2. Just keep on searching on comparison sites as the prices do change everyday and have a look at your local insurance brokers as well.

No idea - that's just the figure Tesco came back with - the quote for the day before when he was still 17 was just over £5k!! So it was less than half just because he turned 18!
