Who thought up this stupid idea?

All around where I live there are Pedestrian Crossings with Speed Cameras directly a few feet ahead of them ... So, what do I do as I am approaching the crossing? Yes, thats right I look down at my speedo to make sure I am not going over the speed limit ... And what am I possibly NOT doing? Yes, thats right I am possibly not looking at the Pedestrian Crossing for anyone who might be waiting to cross, or even worse, anyone who is already crossing.

Now, I consider myself a very capable and observant driver, and I am never going to be a threat to anyone on a crossing, but not everyone out there are capable and observant drivers, are they?

Surely the speed cameras should be placed a good number of yards before the Pedestrian Crossing, or maybe for there not to be a Speed Camera there at all because of the distraction ... That makes sense, doesn't it???
Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.

As the speed camera is situated close to the crossing has there been a problem with inappropriate speeds?

People approaching a crossing should be keeping the speed down and if this is the only way for that to happen then it will hopefully be succesful

Nowt you can do, if someone gets killed, they'll blame speeding. They've got their bases covered, they don't give a damn about pedestrians.

If you are approaching a pedestrian crossing, you should be slowing down anyway, so looking at your speedo is irrelevant...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I am totally against inappropriate speeding anywhere, BUT I really feel we drivers are so afraid of speed cameras and mobile speed catchers we are spending too much time glancing down at the speedo to make sure we are not going over 30, it's distracting and can cause accidents. Also I always have some tail gaiter up my rear end scaring me, I can't speed up cos of the bloody cameras and I cant slow down cos of tailgaters Grrrrrrrr

Pretty much spot on, you should be looking ahead for possible issues and if need be slowing down/preparing for the crossings.

Why is it so hard for people to manage to keep their speed within the limits, from some of the posts on here people have immense difficulty keeping their speed down, and looking at the speedo is a real hardship that they can't possibly manage as part of their normal drive.
Is it that some cars have the speedo hidden under the steering column and I've never noticed?

Seeing a speed camera should never be an "oh ****" moment requiring you to either brake sharply, or stop what you're doing to have a panicked look at the speedo, especially not around towns/as you're approaching crossings etc where you should be paying more attention to your speed compared to the situation anyway.

Are you sure these are speed cameras and not crossing cameras?
