Bad dog!

Hi all
I have just returned from my mother in laws after my dog pooed upstairs on her landing (we were both upstairs looking at something at the time). She is just over 1 now and has done the same thing once before at christmas but we just put it down to not being properly trained yet. She wouldnt do this in her own home.
She did the same thing again upstairs at a friends house 3 months ago. We dont have an upstairs in our home.
Can anyone think of why she might have done this? My partner was downstairs at the time, the back door was open and she had just came in from doing a pee. Shes also a regular little thing (tmi!) so i know she probably didnt evn need to go.
I cant help but feeling so disappointed in her. Any light on this or any way of preventing this from reoccuring would be much appreciated!

Could be anything, feeling a bit ill, nervous, lazy, raining outside...once in a while I really wouldn't stress over it, one of ours is 8 and maybe once or twice a year she may leave a small, ahem, present.
Unless it becomes very regular I'd really forget about it0 -
Maybe she doesn't like houses with upstairs

Did any pets (of any species) live in either house?
It can be a scent / strange smell / new territory reaction.
It could also be stress - if you don't have an upstairs (meaning you & OH always on the same floor) - she might feel insecure when one of you disappears upstairs and she doesn't know where you are.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

It might just be the upstairs thing if she's not used to it. The first thing mutt did when I brought her home from the rescue centre was walk upstairs and pee in the middle of the landing. (The next thing was to try to jump out of the first floor window.)
Is there any way to stop her from going upstairs in the first place? If it's only occasional and you're not sure of the reason, that seems like the safest option. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Do you think this could have been some sort of attention seeking? .. Dogs can be like children in that if they feel they are being ignored they can do things that they know are wrong to get that attention. Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.0

Dogs can often easily climb stairs but find it more difficult to get down. If she is not used to stairs she might need encouragement and for you to go down with her.If you found this post useful please will you click "thank you"? It cheers me up. :j0

Thanks fo the replies
I think keeping her downstairs if possible sounds like the best plan. Only my friends house has a dog so not sure if she would have been marking in the other.
She flies up and down the stairs easily so im wondering if she maybe didnt want to miss something so didnt want to go back down.
Shes likes to keep me on my toes!0 -
Maybe she feels overwhelmed being in houses that are not her own? All new surroundings etc might be a bit too much for her.Never argue with an idiot; they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.0

Has she been spayed? Our old ex breeding girl used to poo in the house when she was coming into season.
It could be a nervous reaction. She is still very young.
We did have her spayed eventually- first vet had said not to at her age but second vet we rushed her to said she had pyrometra

This is what I was going to say too. My dog pee's in other peoples houses (perfect house training at home), and it does seem to be nervousness. We keep him on his lead, and hold onto him, for the whole visit if we have to. This way he knows wearen't going to leave him, he is reassured by the contact through the lead, and if he does try to pee, we can stop him and get him outside quickly
. It does work, we find now that after an hour or so we can let himgo and he is fine
Please excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!0
