  • I always wanted book vouhers too, in fact, still would! What is another good gift for children you don't know well enough for a skateboard or machine gun?

    Boys or girls? How old?
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.
  • Every person having to work an extra year (or an extra 7 in my case) is job-blocking a dole person's potential job .... so I don't get it really. Unless there's full employment only X will ever have a job, so why force those who have worked solidly, without a break for 50 years, to work extra?

that assumes jobs are limited in supply, and one person working means another isn't.

The same was said about why women shouldn't work. The economy has expanded.

    Thanks treliac, and everyone else.

She died at 7pm this evening. I was there until about 3.30 this afternoon. I'm so glad I was able to go. My dad seems to be coping well so far.

Lydia, I hope you are all OK.

It sounds like what the Victorians would have called a "good death", gentle, with family around, and everyone having said goodbye to her.

    Much love to you all.

Update: DS is up and down a lot, DD slightly better. I've decided not to make them go back to school until Monday. We will spend tomorrow and the weekend with my dad and a gradually increasing number of my brothers.

Thanks for all the kind thoughts, wishes and prayers. When I'm stuck at home with my kids, this place makes me feel I have just a little bit of adult company.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Wow you must be feeling better if you are able to jokingly suggest that there is any adult company on this board. :rotfl:

DD, who is 8, has been watching some CBBC show about driving. As I was driving her through the centre of town during this evening's rush hour, she held forth on the importance of not allowing myself to be distracted while driving, complete with demands that I look at her (admittedly while waiting at a red light) while she mimed the difference between looking down to reach for a drink and feeling for it without taking one's eyes of the road. There may be puerile arguments elsewhere on this board, but the NPT is a haven of maturity.

As for not feeling well, you shoul be ill here, we could read books in bed in companionable silence. I miss that about flat sharing and uni and school...climbing into bed with friends to watch tv or read. As a married adult I don't have any bed friends any more.

A friend's husband had been away with work and came home feeling amorous. Got through the front door and could hear noise upstairs, so assumed his wife was watching TV in bed. Stripped off downstairs and ran up the stairs naked. Through the bedroom door to be greeted by wife and three amused girlfriends.
